Despite the claims of the Colombian government and those in the U.S., Canada and the EU eager to consummate "free trade" pacts with that regime, the human rights situation in that country is deteriorating fast. Indeed, by key measures — the killing of unionists, extra-judicial killings by the military, and the forced displacement of civilians — Colombia’s human rights situation is amongst the worst in the world and getting worse. In the case of union killings, it remains the very worst.

On Friday 17th April, the legal team in the years-long Phiri water case filed an application for leave to appeal to the Constitutional Court. The application is to appeal the judgment handed down on 25th March 2009, by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein. The SCA judgment was the result of an appeal by the City of Johannesburg/ Johannesburg Water (the ‘City’) and the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) of the previous ruling of the Johannesburg High Court in April 2008, which declared that prepaid water meters were both illegal and unconstitutional and ordered the City to provide residents with 50 litres of free water per day. ... read full story / add a comment

On Friday, the Kliptown 5 were sentenced in the Protea Magistrates Court following their previous conviction on charges of “public violence”. Handing down very harsh sentences, the magistrate made her intent very clear: the defendants must be deterred from participating in any future protest action. Four of the five – comrades Charlie, Sibongile, Ricardo and Oscar – were sentenced to 2 years in prison, or a R3000 fine each, both suspended for 5 years. The fifth defendant, comrade Thabo, was sentenced to 2 years in prison suspended for 3 years or a R3000 fine (payable immediately). ... read full story / add a comment

Helen Zille and the City of Cape Town need to stop trying to score cheap political/elections propaganda points and be honest with the people of Cape Town (see press statement of City of Cape Town below). The so-called ‘water management devices’ are simply pre-paid meters in drag. Like the pre-paid meters which have been declared unconstitutional and illegal by the Johannesburg High Court, these devices dispense the 6000 ‘free’ litres per month/per household and then automatically cut off. ... read full story / add a comment

On the 03rd September 2007 more than twenty comrades were arrested in community protests organized by the Anti Privatisation Forum against the slow or non-delivery of services in Soweto (Kliptown and Protea South). Fourteen comrades were arrested in Protea South though only four of those charged were taken to the Protea Magistrate’s court on the 4th of September 2007 and the others were released after being held captive for more than 24 hours without any charges being laid. In Kliptown, twelve comrades were arrested for public violence including five juveniles (underage, school-going children) and have been appearing in court since September 2007. After more than twenty appearances and almost two years, five were found guilty of public violence yet the community was arrested for demanding housing. ... read full story / add a comment
