Σε αυτό το κείμενο θα ασχοληθούμε με την συγκλονιστική περίπτωση της κατάλυσης των σταχτών του Joe Hill. Μετά την παράδοση του φακέλου με τις στάχτες του Joe Hill από το εθνικό ταχυδρομείο στο συνδικάτο της IWW το 1988, επακολούθησε μια ανοικτή συζήτηση για το τι έπρεπε να γίνει με αυτές - εκτός από το να σκορπιστούν τον αέρα. In the midst of the U.S. Civil War (1861 – 1865), as somewhere between half a million to three quarters of a million bodies lay dead from bullets and disease, Emanuel Leutze completed a painting titled Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way for the U.S. Capitol. The painting celebrated empire as central to American history. Included in the final draft of the painting was a free black man, subordinate to the leadership of the white men forging the path of empire across the continent; supposedly saved from slavery with their leadership.1 Of course, as W.E.B. Du Bois famously discussed, central to the Civil War was the “general strike of the slaves”; their resistance was key to abolition. En guise de conclusion, il faut refuser qu’à l’avenir, le lien qu’entretiennent les individus entre eux soit basé sur une compétition, voire la peur que l’autre puisse nous être dangereux. Il faut entrevoir la possibilité d’instaurer une vie d’entraide et de protection mutuelle, soit autant de propositions que l’anarchisme nous suggère; à condition encore qu’on accepte de tendre l’oreille aux idées qu’il nous propose. Je crois que le foisonnement d’idées qu’il génère nous permet de nous poser réellement la question pourquoi la démocratie?, et ultimement de nous sortir collectivement de cet objet de contemplation qui a échoué dans sa vocation. ... read full story / add a comment

[This was written in the 90's when I was invited to speak at the Bertha Capen Reynolds Society, around 1994 in Seattle,WA. Bertha Capen Reynolds was a socialist social worker who was inspired by the Seattle General Strike. The ending is lost to the dustbin, but it discusses many of the events that let to the most recent economic crisis. My theory of the transition period has evolved since then, but not too serious of mistakes.
