The following selection is from 'Debates in South African Labour History', an undated booklet published by SACHED in Durban that collected a series of articles written by the LACOM labour service organisation for the 'Learning Nation'. The latter was a supplement to the now-defunct radical anti-apartheid 'New Nation' newspaper. Edited by Zwelakhe Sisulu, and Catholic-financed, 'New Nation' was a weekly tabloid primarily aimed at black readers. ... read full story / add a comment

Ella Baker stressed the need to not only politicize and mobilize people, but to consciously develop people's capacities to be organizers and leaders in the long haul struggle for a better world. While "each one teach one" strategies and training people in the skills of organizing don't grab headlines in the media, it is this work that builds movement and develops a community of empowerment, solidarity and support that we need in order to transform society. ... read full story / add a comment

This article dissects some of the narratives surrounding the founding of the American Republic – in particular, the actions of Jefferson and Washington in relation to the ideals they professed. They claimed to be pro-limited government – what did they actually do when they got into office? The answers are highly instructive, and suggest that we might be better off inventing a truly new future rather than yearning for the ‘freedoms’ of the past… ... read full story / add a comment

... read full story / add a comment

It may not feel like it, but every day, you make history. Many people think that only extraordinary people make history, but that’s simply not true. History is the study of massive trends and patterns in the behavior of ordinary human beings like you and I. All of our actions, in some small way change the world whether we want them to or not, and so, we are involved in the creation of history every time we act. Future generations will study and judge our actions, just as we study and judge the actions of previous generations. The question that you have to ask yourself is “How do I want to be viewed by history, by future generations, by my descendants?” ... read full story / add a comment

It is a seasonal story of ancient Palestine: the Arab Jewish king, the suicidal religious militants, the re-invention of God and the abolition of Jerusalem. The historical truth is both stranger and more familiar than the tales in the Gospel. It is a sound historical analysis of Palestine 37-4 BC. ... read full story / add a comment

Following a brief period of burn-out after Mayday 2004 Anarchism enjoyed a huge resurgence in activity in 2005.
