In this piece, I propose a different way that we might approach radical, revolutionary, transformative politics. I propose experimentation with new and unique political spaces—both conceptual and physical—which hold closely to a belief that another world is possible; which use that hope to build for the long-haul and on a large scale; and yet which, at the same time, hold us, nurture us, and ignite us as real people as we struggle daily, yearly, multi-generationally to get where we need to go. I propose that these spaces must go beyond the traditional organizational styles and formats that we've become used to—be they campaign organizations and coalitions, non-profits, collectives, spontaneous mobilizations, cadre groups, or revolutionary parties. Instead, I propose rethinking many of the assumed conventions and truisms of Left movements, and reaching out even more widely into society and history—even into enemy territory—for lessons and inspiration. ... read full story / add a comment

As members of the Research Group on Collective Autonomy, we join our voices to those who are speaking out against unprecedented State violence and police repression in the wake of the G20 Summit held in Toronto in June. This violence has affected our friends, our colleagues, our comrades, our partners, our communities. In the same vein, we wish to denounce the misinformed and sensationalist discourses that have been emerging in the media. [Français] ... read full story / add a comment

The world financial system is approaching complete collapse in the next few years. 21st century Anarchism is a paradigm for a money-free society. There are no transition stages from capitalism to communism. hen the world's money loses all of its value then civilization itself will begin to collapse. Unfettering capitalism from the money system ushers in the spontaneous emergence of unfettered society that transcends the ideals of capitalism and communism. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

In the wake of the G8/G20 economic summit protests in Toronto, Canada this past weekend, black bloc demonstrators have once again sparked discussion on the left and hysterics in the corporate media. Closely linked to anarchism, the continued popularity of the black bloc tactic colors the reputation of protesters, particularly anarchists, and merits a response with greater clarity from anarchists. ... read full story / add a comment

Glass shards lay scattered on the ground in front of a large chain store on Ste-Catherine Street West. A young punk, his face covered with a black bandana, screams at a line of riot police. Molotov cocktails and rocks fly through the air. Though these are the typical images associated with anarchism in Montreal, there’s a much broader picture to the political ideology that stems back over a century in this city. Anarchism, the belief that formal government is unnecessary and therefore illegitimate, has deep roots in Montreal’s communities, from factories to academic institutions like Concordia. ... read full story / add a comment

In a recent conversation with a compa, we discussed the movement internationally and here within the Empire. We compared. Things are intensifying around the world, due to many different factors, including fundamental contradictions of capitalism, and indigenous people in particular and oppressed people as a whole own conscious struggles to be free. Here in the u.s. we have much work to do, and as my comrade I was talking to put it, "We have to clean house!"

Dear Friends and Comrades, It’s been a few weeks since our July board meeting, where we took on the challenging task of choosing between the thirty-plus grant applications we received this round. We had a productive and invigorating weekend, including an extensive conversation revisiting the Institute for Anarchist Studies’ (IAS) purpose, which will be articulated in a new statement of direction on our Web site soon. Most important, we are happy to announce that we decided to fund three fantastic essay proposals (see below for descriptions): "Sienvolando: Snapshots of Art Actions, Popular Power, and Collaborative Networks in Argentina," by KellyAnne Mifflin "Organizing against Capitalism: Translation of Eric Duran’s ‘Creating a Counterhegemonic Economic System,’" by Scott Pinkelman "Futures Not (Yet) Chosen: An Anti-Authoritarian Vision for South Africa," by Taylor Sparrow ... read full story / add a comment

We decided to publish an open letter addressed to all individuals or groups interested in the small milieu of publishing and distribution of anarchist ideas. As members of the AEELI, who are involved in a NPO (nonprofit organization) dedicated to this cause, we believe it is essential that not only our ideas but our actions are known and debated. We hope they are not misinterpreted and that these interpretations do not undermine some people's solidarity. We can not deal comprehensively with the history of our association. However, we must say that we have been through some difficult, though fruitful, years and we hope that the future brings even more stability and that we leave our precariousness behind us.

The NorthEast Anarchist Network is endorsing the "Self Described Anarchist Collective" and Global Justice Action calls for a diversity of tactics, including direct action, to disrupt the Spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Washington, DC. Even in this era of uncontrolled economic retraction and collapse, the IMF and World Bank continue to reach for their misleading, self-proclaimed objective of "eradicating poverty", while paradoxically ignoring the needs of poor and indigenous communities. ... read full story / add a comment |
