This book sets out to show that unequal societies are bad for everyone in them. It does this by collating decades of research in the areas of health, crime, trust, mental health, obesity, education, teenage pregnancy and social mobility, all of which demonstrate statistically the connection between social inequality and social problems. The authors explain that, in hierarchical societies that are unequal in wealth and status, our social class affects all aspects of our lives. From an Irish perspective, one of the most interesting points they make may be about the connection between inequality, levels of trust in society and corruption. read full story / add a comment

AB’ye girişin nihai olarak demokratikleşmeye yardımcı olacağını söyleyerek Türkiye ile Yunanistan’ın otoriteryen geleneğini kıyasladılar.

Dans son livre «Le savant et le politique», le sociologue allemand Max Weber a très bien décrit le rapport que l’État entretient avec la violence. Selon Weber, l’État moderne s’est approprié «le monopole de la violence physique légitime». C’est même l’une des conditions de sa survie. On le sait, les appareils répressifs (la police, l’armée, le système carcéral) sont sous le contrôle exclusif de l’État. Celui-ci utilise leur force pour préserver l’ordre social sur son territoire. Mais comme l’État est sensé représenter le «bien commun», on finit par penser que la police et l’armée sont au service de la population… C’est du moins ce qu’on tente de nous faire croire. Là où règne l’inégalité, l’appareil de répression a un rôle bien précis à jouer : préserver les privilèges d’une minorité par tous les moyens nécessaires. read full story / add a comment
