ierland / groot-brittannië / anarchistische beweging / opinion/analysis Monday September 10, 2007 19:43 by Gregor Kerr

The victorious campaign to save the Crichton Campus has been one of the BIROC's biggest campaigns to date and easily
the biggest campaign fought by IWW Clydeside GMB and the new Glasgow
University job branch, and has involved civic groups, local
neighbourhood bodies, trade unions and political organisations from
across Scotland. The IWW has played a leading role in this campaign,
and it is necessary to reflect on this for the battles that lie ahead,
as well as to learn organisational lessons for our practice at the
moment.

The campaign is yet to write a collective response to the victory, and
some of the participants are taking a well-earned break from
campaigning activities. In the absence of this I've put together what
amounts to my personal take on the campaign (it's not a collective
statement - it's just my contribution) so that others can get some
handle on things, we can begin to debate things, and the wider movement
can begin to draw any relevant lessons. read full story / add a comment

A recent WSM public meeting in Dublin about anarchism saw something a bit different; members of Fine Gael turning up to defend capitalism. We were told it’s a great system and the rich are simply enjoying the rewards of hard work. read full story / add a comment

'Voices of Republicanism' is a documentary on the current state of the Republican movement. Through discourse with activists from a wide range of political backgrounds and of varying ages we attempt to provide a small insight into the movement. This is a documentary through the words of people who were there and have seen it, those who still carry the torch of Republicanism and those who have made a break with the movement entirely. read full story / add a comment

On the 18th of May Dublin Shell to Sea is going to escalate its campaign against Shell’s command centre – Corrib house on Leeson Street with another day of action starting at 7.30 am sharp. This attempt to shut down Shell’s HQ, like our last day of action (http://www.indymedia.ie/article/82200), is being called to highlight the incredible theft of our natural resources that totals 51 billion euros in the Corrib field alone. This is only possible with your help; we encourage everyone to come along. read full story / add a comment

The greedy consultants are taking advantage of the current crisis in the Irish health system to help line their own pockets. They're not going on strike in solidarity with the nurses' justified industrial action. Instead, they've recognised the opportunity to make the health service unworkable and so increase the pressure on the Health Services Executive (HSE) and the Department of Health to make their new contracts even sweeter and grab some more cash in the process. They're delaying the much needed reforms in the health service and the increases in consultant numbers, that would benefit all of Irish society, for their own selfish reasons. read full story / add a comment

On May 24th, 2007, the people of the Republic of Ireland will cast their votes in a general election. This election will be a farce, where the people get to choose between a list of nearly-identical politicians, with identical policies, based on promises that nobody believes. That's what they call democracy. read full story / add a comment

This essay argues that residents associations are important for building working class power, although there are many contradictions for socialists. The examples given are drawn from Scotland, but are there as generalisable examples. A short companion piece on a wider context from Glasgow to San Francisco can also be read which draws on further examples (see end of article). read full story / add a comment
