As we prepare to enter the 3rd month of the Occupy movement a commonly heard criticism targets both the lack of clear demands and the related complex and often drawn out decision making processes being used at Occupy General Assemblies. These criticisms however miss the point, against the traditional left with its package of pre-set answers (best before 1917) what makes Occupy different is that process of decision making through assembly. The assembly form is not just a way of making decisions but also a different form of doing politics. The Assembly is in embryo the different world we seek to create. read full story / add a comment

Anyone who has been active on the left and broader labour movement will have faced the 'million dollar question from republicans on the 'national question'. The question of opposition or indifference to the partition of the island is often thrown by republicans like a dagger in the direction of the existing left. In responnse many become either wedded to the romantic idea of the flag removing all our sins or face the jibe of being a ‘gas and water socialist’ or at worst a sop to unionism. It’s the type of choice you get at Stormont every four years where you get to choose between Coca Cola and Pepsi. Equally it’s the type of approach of the PSNI press statement that presents every ’dissenter’ from the status-quo as being wedded to physical force republicanism. The sixty million payoff to prison officers in Northern Ireland could be much better spent on addressing the causes of crime such as poverty, social deprivation and prison rehabilitation. Prison officers who served during the Troubles could walk away from their jobs with packages of more than £120,000 plus pension as part of a £60m redundancy programme aimed at ‘modernising’ the service. read full story / add a comment

Esse texto tem por objetivo realizar uma reflexão teórica acerca do poder. Ele apresenta a problemática envolvida nas discussões do tema e três categorias fundamentais que pretendem abarcar as distintas concepções do poder; a partir de então, aprofunda as posições de Michel Foucault e Tomás Ibáñez, que concebem o poder como assimetria nas relações de força. Propõe um modelo teórico e um método de análise que consideram a dominação e a autogestão como tipos ideais e extremos de um eixo da participação, que permitem refletir e tipificar as relações e os modelos de poder. Utilizado o modelo proposto, analiso o capitalismo, caracterizando-o como um sistema de dominação que implica um modelo de poder dominador, ainda que possua espaços de participação. Nessa análise, abordo as classes sociais, a luta de classes e a natureza do Estado. Hoy, la inmensa mayoría de los sectores educativos expresa su rechazo categórico, motivado y argumentado a la transformación paulatina – la reforma a la ley 30 es una mera etapa- del ministerio de la educación en una superintendencia de regulación del mercado educativo, que estaría a cargo de ministerio del comercio educativo. Ese es el objetivo apenas velado del gobierno ultraneoliberal y amoral de Juan Manuel Santos para la educación, y de su obediente ministra María Fernando Campo, quién, en sus historia personal, se destacó más en presidir juntas de accionistas que claustros deliberativos y democráticos.
