Six men were on trial accused of falsely imprisoning the then Tanáiste (deputy Prime Minister) and Labour Party TD, Joan Burton, and her colleague in Jobstown, a working class suburb of Dublin, on 15 November 2014. The charge of false imprisonment carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. All six men claimed that they were exercising their right to protest, and that the protest was peaceful. This was part of a mass campaign that successfully defeated the attempt to introduce water charges. Following a nine week trial, the six have been found not guilty. read full story / add a comment

Observations from anarchist in Ireland on the UK EU membership referendum. The referendum will take place in north east Ireland which is under British rule. Citizens of southern Ireland who live in the UK will also have a vote but because the UK is physically the gateway to Europe from Ireland all of the island will be effected by the result. read full story / add a comment

They painted our red and black flags and banners with blood and flesh of our comrades. Those responsible for the massacre are out there. We know them from Haymarket, Bloody Sunday, Mayday 1977 Istanbul Massacre, Reyhanli, Gezi Uprising, Roboski Massacre, Diyarbakir Dungeons and Suruç. We know them from the daily exploitation of a thousand year. They stand before us merciless, smirking.

Although it has been orchestrated by the hands of ISIS gang, we know that, just like the Suruç Massacre, state and AKP who is holding state power in their hands are those who are in fact responsible for this massacre. We have seen once again that AKP is capable of doing everything not to lose the power and weaker it gets, more brutal it will get.

Below are two further statements from anarchists groups in the Turkish state on the Ankara bombing.

For far too long major segments of the working class have been dormant under the illusion that change can be delegated to exterior organizations or parties. When our struggles are bureaucratized and delegated to others, we lose ownership over them and in turn lose many benefits gained through them. A victory for the working class can only be established if our class is active in the struggle leading to victory. [Italiano] [Castellano] read full story / add a comment

[English] read full story / add a comment

Last Tuesday the Gardaí attempted to stop the Anti-Capitalist Bloc marching to join up with the Right to Work Campaign at the Dail protest. Despite riding horses into the march they failed to either deny us our freedom to protest or to provoke a response as we pushed through and around them. Join us this week, same time and same place as we once more assert our freedom to protest. [Italiano] read full story / add a comment

On 24 November 2009 250,000 public sector workers in Ireland took part in a national strike against planned pay cuts. Many WSM members who work in the public sector played a direct part in the organisation of the strike and student members helped organise solidarity actions at the universities where strikes were happening. They also toured other picket lines to send in reports and photos. Here we present these reports and the reports sent in by members on strike who had access to smart phones with which they sent live news on the day to the WSM twitter feed read full story / add a comment

On 28 September 2009 the Kennedy Road commune, one of 14 shack settlements in Durban governed autonomously and democratically by Abahlali baseMjondolo was attacked by a militia chanting fascist slogans against non-Zulus. Their stated aim was to kill Abahlali baseMjondolo leader S'bu Zikode.

There was spontaneous resistance to the militia and after a 23 hour battle they were decisively routed. The police then stepped in and arrested key AbM leaders while, under police protection, the militia systematically destroyed the homes of more than 30 Abahlali leaders. Local ANC leaders from outside of the settlement then took control of it with full backing of the police and senior politicians.

Attacks, death threats and have now spread to nearby settlements and it is crystal clear that there is a major state backed attack on the largest poor people's movement in Africa.

On Friday 31st July workers at Thomas Cook occupied the shop on Grafton street. Management got a court injunction against the occupation and on Monday morning a huge force of Gardai sealed off the area, smashed their way into the shop and arrested the 28 workers inside. The workers at Thomas Cook were fighting for a better redundancy package. To the approximately €700,000 offered by the company, the workers are demanding an added €300,000. That afternoon the High Court released the workers and negotiations were started on an improved redundancy package. The articles were written by WSM members involved in supporting the struggle of the Thomas Cook workers. read full story / add a comment

The long running struggle in Erris (Rossport) against Shell's attempt to impose an experimental gas pipeline on the local community has once more errupted in recent days with repeated local direct actions against the compound Shell are trying to construct. In his article Erris: Community in Struggle against Shell WSM member Sean Mallory details the latest events following the resumption of construction. Here we provide background articles on the struggle and a focus on the events of last Summer and Autumn which culminated in Shell having to halt construction over winter. The WSM has been active within the community and the national campaign since its beginning. For us, the basis of this campaign is direct action; a local community struggling to gain control over their own environment and the decisions that affect them. Back in 2006 we published this overview of the struggle and laid out the reasons why the Shell pipeline at Rossport is not safe. As well as the issue of local safety the core issue of the struggle continues to be the deal Shell was given for the gas extraction which will see them pay no royalties, this is why Ireland stands to lose €400 billion in natural gas and oil deposits. read full story / add a comment
