Aside from my personal aversion to alcohol and the abuse thereof, I strongly feel that alcohol consumption – and production – is a highly political issue, which anarchists should not ignore. In this article I will attempt to explain why I feel it is that anarchists should consider starting a dialogue regarding the alcohol industry, the role of alcohol – and alcoholism - in capitalist society, its current effects on the poor and working classes, and its place in a future anarchist society. This is an issue that has been considered by anarchists in the past, but unfortunately does not seem to warrant much attention these days, and I’m uncomfortable to say that I think that many anarchists – as with other issues facing us – may be reluctant to admit that it is a problem for, or within, our movement. read full story / add a comment

In March 2006 six Abahlali militants in the Kennedy Road settlement were arrested on a trumped up murder charge. The same tactic had been used against the Landless Peoples' Movement the previous year. The six were released after a high profile hunger strike, now, a year later, the state has admitted that it never had any evidence and quietly dropped all charges.

In late 2006 the two largest movements in the country, Abahlali and the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign, publicly refused the authority of the NGO left . When the hunger strike reached a critical phase the (markedly authoritarian) NGO left cynically tried to exploit the situation by offering money for legal support in exchange for an acceptance of their authority. The hunger strikers heroically advised the movement to refuse the money and it dealt with this repression on its own and kept its autonomy in tact. read full story / add a comment

This article looks at the possibilities and opportunities for spreading anarchist ideas in Africa through the intervention of anarchists and anarcho-syndicalists from abroad, by building pragmatic solidarity, and supporting African trade unions and other movements of the workers and poor.

It highlights some factors which need to be taken into consideration when doing so, and makes some suggestions towards developing an anarcho-syndicalist strategy for Africa. read full story / add a comment

This article aims to examine, briefly, the relationship between theoretical unity and collective responsibility, and their mutual dependence within an anarchist-communist organisation. It also poses some questions regarding the problems that may arise within an organisation, surrounding these notions, and the challenges that these may present to the growth and endurance of the organisation, and the movement. read full story / add a comment

Abahlali baseMjondolo, a movement on shack dwellers with a strong presence in more than 40 shack settlements in Durban, Pinetown and Pietermartizburg has mounted effective resistance to evictions over the last two years and has now seemingly been successful in stopping evictions in all the settlements where it works. But now the state has hit back with a draconian new law that would make it a criminal offence for shack dwellers to resist evictions and a criminal offence for landowners to fail to evict shack dwellers. It's an all out war on the poor. read full story / add a comment
