Η ταξική συνείδηση πρέπει να ενθαρρυνθεί και ενισχυθεί. Και αυτό πρέπει να είναι ένας από τους στόχους μιας αναρχικής οργάνωσης. read full story / add a comment

Why are anarchists always dragging class into everything? Isn’t class struggle something more at home in a history book than in Celtic Tiger Ireland? After all you don’t see too many downtrodden workers wandering around in donkey jackets, cloth caps and heavy boots. read full story / add a comment

Anarchists are usually pretty good at listing the things we are against: capitalism, racism, religious sectarianism, authoritarianism and so on. We are usually pretty good at explaining how best to struggle: direct democracy and mass direct action. Where we often fall down is in explaining what we want at the end of the day, and convincing our listeners that it is a realistic alternative rather than a utopian pipe dream read full story / add a comment

Late last year Ireland saw ferry ships occupied, port workers turning away a strikebreaking ship, and a half-day solidarity strike by about 150,000 workers. Here we present an overview of what happened along with links to articles published by anarchists in Ireland, before, during and after the struggle. read full story / add a comment

Following the Irish Ferries dispute Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte and union leader Jack O’Connor have decided to place the blame for driving down wages in Ireland on the migrant workers themselves and not on the bosses. They want us to see our greedy employers as some sort of powerless bystanders, not as the enemy who make these decisions. Rabbitte made a statement that work permits for workers from the newer EU countries might be a good thing, this was quickly supported by SIPTU President Jack O’Connor. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Ferries dispute escalated on November 24th when goons from a private security firm brought Eastern European seafarers onto the ships. If the ferries resumed sailing the dispute would be effectively over, with Irish Ferries winning hands down. read full story / add a comment

Most of our unions are run by people who see their role as simply lobbying the government, providing services and dealing with individual members' problems rather than also fighting to improve pay and conditions read full story / add a comment

The end of 2005 saw the occupation to two ferry ships to prevent them being taken over by security to facilitate the replacement of the workers on the ships. Over 100,000 workers left work and marched in solidarity with the occupation on a Friday in cities across Ireland. A settlement with the company was reached and the union declared a victory. But was this settlement really a victory? read full story / add a comment

Last night the long running dispute on Irish Ferries exploded when the company tried to secretly bring on security guards and replacement workers onto the Isle of Inishmore at Pembroke in Wales and the Ulysses at Holyhead. Ships' officers on the Isle of Inishmore, have barricaded themselves into the engine room. SIPTU says a lockout has also taken place on the Jonathan Swift. read full story / add a comment

There were fewer strike days in Ireland last year than in any year since the 1920s. At the same time the number of disputes referred to the Labour Court was up 21%. Does this mean that 'going through the procedures' and being 'reasonable' is paying dividends of workers? read full story / add a comment

WHY IS THE concept of class so important to anarchists? Why are we constantly talking about classes and class struggle? Some of our opponents accuse us of living in the past, they claim the working class is dying out. After all you don't see too many workers wandering around in donkey jackets, cloth caps and heavy boots. So that settles the question, doesn't it? No, it doesn't, so let us get away from silly caricatures and get down to basics. read full story / add a comment

1913 in Ireland saw a six month struggle by Dublin workers to defend their freedom to be members of a militant trade union, the Irish Transport Workers Union. In the course of that struggle they were attacked by the police, the catholic church and sections of the nationalist movement. But they also set up a workers militia to defend their pickets and protests. read full story / add a comment
