Όσο βαθύτερα ερευνούμε τις επιδράσεις της εξουσιαστικής πολιτικής μέσα στην ιστορία, τόσο περισσότερο καταλήγουμε να είμαστε πεπεισμένοι ότι η "Βούληση για εξουσία" έχει υπάρξει μέχρι σήμερα μία από τις ισχυρότερες κινητήριες δυνάμεις στην ανάπτυξη των μορφών των ανθρώπινων κοινωνιών. Η ιδέα ότι όλα τα πολιτικά και κοινωνικά γεγονότα δεν είναι τίποτε άλλο παρά το αποτέλεσμα των δεδομένων οικονομικών συνθηκών και ότι είναι εξηγήσιμα μέσω αυτών δεν μπορεί να αντέξει μπροστά σε μία προσεκτική εξέταση. Το γεγονός ότι οι οικονομικές συνθήκες και οι ιδιαίτερες μορφές της κοινωνικής παραγωγής έχουν διαδραματίσει ένα ρόλο στην εξέλιξη της ανθρωπότητας αναγνωρίζεται από όλους όσους έχουν προσπαθήσει να κατανοήσουν εις βάθος τα διάφορα κοινωνικά φαινόμενα. read full story / add a comment

Once again the radical left petite bourgeoisie has failed. This is not particular to Greece. It is a general tendency of struggles in many other social formations as well, wherever the petite bourgeoisie instead of the working class is leading the struggle. One lesson to learn is that whenever we persist in hoping that something positive will come from petite bourgeois leadership, however radical they might seem, THE RESULT WILL BE THE SAME: A TOTAL CAPITULATION TO CAPITAL. read full story / add a comment

Η παρέμβαση αυτή αφιερώνεται πρωτίστως στους αναρχικούς/ες και τους αναρχίζοντες που μας έπρηξαν από το τον Γενάρη προτείνοντας άλλοι άμεσα και άλλοι έμμεσα ότι πρέπει εμείς οι αναρχικοί να ξεκολλήσουμε από ιδεολογικές αγκυλώσεις και ιδεοληψίες και να ψηφίσουμε αριστερά ως μια προοπτική υπέρβασης της συγκυρίας, (αυταρχική δεξιά κυβέρνηση, επέλαση του νεοφιλελευθερισμού κλπ). Επίσης αφιερώνεται στους αριστερούς /ες που τώρα κλαίνε σαν μωρές παρθένες (ποιητική αδεία ας μην μου την πέσουν οι φεμινίστριες). Δεν θα κάνω ανάλυση των μέτρων του νέου μνημονίου ή μια γενικότερη οικονομική ανάλυση και περί νομισματικής πολιτικής (όχι ότι δεν δύναμαι) άλλα θέλω χωρίς μακρηγορίες να σταθώ σε δυο τρία ζητήματα κόντρα και ενάντια στον οικονομισμό. read full story / add a comment

Did those who are already raising Lenin from his tomb to render quick judgement on Syriza's abject “world-historic defeat” (without saying much about what victory would look like or require) actually bother to read the rather similar plans that Syriza put forward before the referendum and that were consistently rejected by the EU and IMF “Institutions”? This rejection is what the referendum was about. The resounding OXI was then used by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to secure the resignation of the leading political representative of the domestic ruling class (and former Prime Minister), Antonis Samaras, and to get all the party leaders with any such claim or ambitions to speak for that class to adopt Syriza's position on the need for debt restructuring and investment funds. One might even say that if there was a class crossover involved here it was the other way around, one that looks more like what Gramsci meant by a hegemonic strategy rather than the way it is presented from the perspective of those standing on Lenin's Tomb. read full story / add a comment

The resounding defeat of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his AKP at the polls in the 7th June general elections in Turkey brings out into the open a loss of political clout on the part of Erdogan as a result of the successive blows he received in the last two years at the hands of the masses and, partly, his erstwhile partners. He makes Marx's "withering away of the state" central to his program, and he rejects electoral party politics. Revolutions are seldom made in favourable circumstances. Russia 1917 emerged from the mass slaughter of WWI and the disintegration of an economy under the pressure of the supply demands of that war. Spain 1936 emerged from a well planned and executed fascist coup amongst a powerful military backed and armed by international fascism. In 2005, the Partiya Karkêren Kurdistani (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) (PKK) announced that it considered the nation-state a hindrance on the road to freedom, and that its strategic objective was not the establishment of a state but of an interlinked network of councils as the basis of self-determination and a new way of living together. The objective of this article is to discuss and explain the PKK’s understanding of politics as it evolved in the 2000s by looking at two concepts: ‘democratic autonomy’ and ‘democratic confederalism.’ This article will put these concepts in a historical and comparative perspective, and contextualise them in wider discussions in political and social sciences. The question central to this contribution is how these concepts make sense in the context of political theory, and how they have the potential to address fundamental shortcomings in modern democracy. In the opening salvos of Latin America’s uneven lurch to the Left in the early twenty-first century, Bolivia distinguished itself as the region’s most radical socio-political terrain.1 Left-indigenous movements in the countryside and cityscapes alike threw the state into crisis and brought two successive neoliberal presidents to their knees – Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada in 2003, and Carlos Mesa in 2005.2 Evo Morales’s party, the Movimiento al Socialismo (Movement Towards Socialism, MAS), leapt into the power vacuum opened up by this series of revolts, and there has been serious debate on the Left as to how best to button down the central political dynamic of the country ever since. In a country where 62 percent of the population self-identified as indigenous in the 2001 census, Morales became the first indigenous president through the December 2005 elections with 54 percent of the popular vote, assuming office in January 2006. Hundreds of thousands of chiefly white middle class protesters took to the streets in Brazil on 15 March in an organized upsurge of hatred against the federal administration led by President Dilma Rousseff of the Workers’ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT). These protests are far more cohesive and better organized than the previous wave of anti-government demonstrations, in 2013; their demands are unambiguously reactionary, and they include primarily the country's elite. read full story / add a comment

Karl Marx once said that history repeats itself, first as a tragedy then as a farce. A case in point is that in South Africa sections of the left are once again calling for a mass workers’ party (MWP) to be formed to contest elections – this they believe will bring us closer to revolution. History says otherwise. Of course the new calls for a MWP stem from the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) breaking from the African National Congress (ANC). As an outcome NUMSA is exploring the possibility of setting up a MWP to contest elections. Many Marxist and leftist influenced organisations, but also cadres within NUMSA, are therefore providing reasons why activists should be interested in such a party. read full story / add a comment

Πραγματικά θα μπορούσε να ισχυριστεί κανείς ότι η εκλογική νίκη του Συ.Ριζ.Α. και ο σχηματισμός κυβέρνησης με τους Ανεξάρτητους Έλληνες αποτελεί ένα ορόσημο, ένα σημείο καμπής στην διαδικασία βίαιης προσαρμογής της ελληνικής κοινωνίας στην ανασυγκρότηση της κερδοφορίας του κεφαλαίου. Με πολύ λίγα λόγια, η διαδικασία αυτή σηματοδοτείται από μια σχεδόν χωρίς προηγούμενο επιτάχυνση αναδιαρθρώσεων που είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα την φτωχοποίηση των λαϊκών στρωμάτων και υποτίμηση της εργασιακής δύναμης, την εκτίναξη της ανεργίας σε ποσοστό που ξεπερνά το 1/4 του ενεργού πληθυσμού, την ελαχιστοποίηση του άμεσου και έμμεσου μισθού, την οικονομική ασφυξία των αυτοαπασχολούμενων, την υπερφορολόγηση των μικροϊδιοκτητών, την καταστροφή της μικροεπιχειρηματικότητας. read full story / add a comment
