WSM joins demo in solidarity with Danish anarchists

On Friday the WSM joined a demonstration in solidarity with those arrested in Copenhagen since the eviction of Ungdomshuset, an autonomous social centre, on Thursday 1st of March. Around 20-30 people from Anarchist Prisoner Support, Polish Anarchist Federation and the WSM gathered outside the Danish embassy on St. Stephen's Green.

The following is a WSM statement on the events of the last week:

In the last week we have seen the streets of Copenhagen turned into a battlefield as the state mobilised an army of police to evict Ungdomshuset, an autonomous youth centre originally given to the youth of Copenhagen as a gift - which was sold from under them to Faderhuset (a homophobic christian sect). In the ensuing street confrontations to win back the house over 600 youths were arrested.

The Danish state spent millions mobilising its police to the Capital for the last week, they could have easily prevented the violent scenes and saved millions by simply buying back the house but it is not in their interests to do so. The crushing of Ungdomshuset and the autonomous movement as a "bad example" of how people can self-organise was always the prime objective.

The Workers Solidarity Movement utterly condemns the actions of the Danish state in selling, evicting and facilitating the demolition of Ungdomshuset. We condemn the raiding of the Anarchist Black Cross's offices, the arrest of their members and the confiscation of their files.

We call for an immediate amnesty for all of those arrested in the struggle for Ungdomshuset. We urge the people of Denmark to take up this demand in schools, workplaces, unions and communities to put as much pressure on the state as possible. We also call for anarchists everywhere to organise in solidarity with our Danish comrades in prison.
