Climate Change Root Causes & Radical Solutions The recent spate of unusually destructive hurricanes in the US and the severe floods in Eastern Europe over the last 2 years have seen the climate change issue climbing the headlines once more. A special report in Time magazine acknowledged that the “serious debate” about whether climate is, or is not occuring, has ended. There is now agreement even among skeptics that climate change is real and that human activity is causing it. Of course the most important issue is whether it is possible to significantly slow or reverse this phenomenon, and if it is, what are the actions we need to take? This is where we begin to most clearly see the bias of the mainstream media emerge. Elsewhere in little 'green' columns around the media, journalists suggest that individual solutions like “eating organic food”, “planting a tree” or using energy efficent lightbulbs will save the planet. This is a myth, and a dangerous one at that. These are all market choices, made within an economy that is based on ever increasing growth and as such, these individualistic, 'environmentally friendly' shopping choices do not even begin to tackle the root causes of environmental problems. In fact, as these products become more successful, they are opening up new markets for these goods and increasing overall economic growth. The conclusion that is so strenously avoided by media from Time magazine to the Guardian and the Irish Times, is that in fact the primary cause of Climate Change is the inherent drive to constantly increase corporate profit within a capitalist market system. Time magazine offers an opinion poll on possible ways to reduce climate change that reveals very little : two options involve increasing taxes (obviously few people opted for these) and two more popular options that involved giving companies tax breaks to develop alternative energy sources. However, nothing substantial was offered to back up the implied claim that our current energy demands can be met by non-fossil fuel alternatives. The best that the liberal consensus has to offer is the ailing Kyoto protocol, which most climate scientists had regarded as being more of a symbolic victory than anything that would make serious inroads into slowing climate change. However, it is clear now that most countries are not on track even to meet these extremely conservative objectives. The 15 longest standing members of the EU (which includes Ireland) had agreed to reduce emissions by 8% by 2010 but are currently predicted to miss this target by 1.6%. The US, the world’s biggest contributor to global warming, actually walked out of the Kyoto talks in Montreal in December 2005, and has only committed to future talks on the stipulation that the dialogue “will not open any negotiations leading to new commitments”. The astounding complacency of liberal environmentalists in the face of this is extremely worrying – Greenpeace International’s political director Steve Sawyer called the meeting “historic” and said it had delivered “just about everything” he wanted. Clearly, neither governments nor corporations are prepared to take the necessary steps to change course from our current catastrophic direction towards real, sustainable alternatives. We can only achieve a sustainable world if we work to build a genuinely sustainable economy, one that produces for need and not to blindly accumulate profits with terrible results for the environment. On Tuesday morning in the west of Irealand forty people from around Sruwaddacon Estuary in Erris brought Shell’s survey work in the area to a complete standstill when they walked out onto the mudflats at low tide to assert their cockle-picking rights and disrupt Shell’s borehole drilling survey. Shell has two barges drilling over 80 test holes in this Special Areas of Conservation, work that is opposed by the local community as part of their ongoing resistance to Shell's plan to run an experimental high pressure raw gas pipeline near their houses. Green Party Minister John Gormley has given the green light for the Irish Coursing Club to capture hares for the coming enclosed hare coursing season.
A story about how a Government who could see the winning line suddenly got side tracked by the issue of poisoning the very people they were hoping would elect them again. Over a dozen people picketed Statoil on Ushers Quay on Friday 5th August as part of the ongoing campaign of solidarity with the 5 men jailed for resisting a potentially dangerous gas pipeline being built near their houses. Significant victories have now been won in the campaign. Saturday saw Irish anarchists joining thousands of other people to march through the streets of Dublin to demand the release of the Rossport 5 - locals jailed by Shell for opposing the construction of a gas pipeline. On Friday WSM members in Dublin and Cork took part in blockades of Statoil garages and the Shell deport in solidarity with the Rossport 5 - jailed for opposing a dangerous gas pipeline. Here are reports from WSM members at the various garages.
In jail since June 29th because they won't obey a court order not to obstruct the building of a high pressure gas pipeline passing through their own lands. The state has lined up behind the gas consortium of Shell, Statoil and Marathon.
A second successful blockade was held this morning outside the Shell Oil Terminal on Centre Park Rd. in Cork. The blockade was held in solidarity with the Rossport 5. About 20 people turned up at 7.30 am. This time Shell reacted aggressively, 'ordering' protestors away from their gates. Oil trucks were prevented from entering and leaving the Shell Central Oil Depot in Cork this morning in solidarity with the Rossport 5 blockade. [Where Shell have had five locals jailed for blocking the construction of a gas pipeline - ed] A solidarity action calling for the release of the Rossport Five [jailed at the behest of Shell for blockading the construction of a gas pipeline in the west of Ireland] took place today outside the Irish Consulate in Edinburgh. In an action planned from the Irish Barrio and spread through the spokes council system, a bus load of Dissent participants left the camp at 7.30am and picketed the consualte. more >>
We awake to news that more towns in Ireland are under water due to storm flooding. And that perhaps the sea ice at the north pole might melt due to temperatures rising above zero. The first story is given a lot more prominence in Irish media than the second but strangely at the same time another story is being celebrated. The start of yet more greenhouse gases being pumped out of their safe place far below the sea off the Irish shore to be processed and then released into the atmosphere via the Corrib refinery (The refinery was sold off by the Irish Government to the Shell company for a fraction of what it is worth).

Anarchists have been writing on ecological issues since, at least, the 1960s. Murray Bookchin, who died earlier this year, lead the anarchist concern about ecological destruction with such classic works as "Post-Scarcity Anarchism," "Towards an Ecological Society" and "The Ecology of Freedom." His warnings have come true to a threateningly worrying degree. Sadly, his solutions are still ignored but that is unsurprising as they go to the heart of the ecological problem, namely domination within humanity as the recondition for the domination of nature and the nature of the capitalist economy.
In a small corner of Mayo in Ireland over the Summer a mass campaign of non-violent direct action systematically, and in part spontaneously, shut down a major development being carried out by several multi-national corporations and the state. Spring zu Komment: 1If I didn't know about Cannabis agriculture, I'd be worried about the future of this planet. As it is, we have a window of opportunity in which to recover balance in environmental, economic, and social structures upon which we all depend, and that all depend upon each other to be sustainable.
Until Cannabis agriculture is considered as a solution, rather than as a problem our species will continue on the present course, toward synergistic collapse and eventual extinction.
