n the Wake of Charlie Hebdo, Free Speech Does Not Mean Freedom From Criticism

category france / belgium / luxemburg | migration / racism | non-anarchist press author Thursday January 08, 2015 20:23author by Jacob Canfield - The Hooded Utilitarian Report this post to the editors

On Wednesday morning, the French satirical paper Charlie Hebdo was attacked by three masked gunmen, armed with kalashnikovs, who stormed the building and killed ten of its staff and two police officers. The gunmen are currently understood to be Muslim extremists. This attack came minutes after the paper tweeted this drawing of ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi.

An armed attack on a newspaper is shocking, but it is not even the first time Hebdo has been the subject of terrorist attacks. Gawker has a good summary of past controversies and attacks involving Hebdo. Most famously, the magazine’s offices were firebombed in 2011, after they printed an issue depicting the Prophet Muhammad on the cover. - See more at:

fuckdaeshwall.jpg imageAfter Nice attack - ISIS and Pegida want a clash of civilisations - lets resist their project 20:17 Fri 15 Jul by Andrew 0 comments

At least 84 dead in Nice as a truck is deliberately driven through the huge crowds marking the anniversary of the French Revolution. The driver who was shot be police after plowing through the crowd for 1.2km is reported to be a French citizen of Tunisian descent. The method of attack which is very similar to one advocated in the ISIS magazine strongly suggests an ISIS /Daesh attack.

Alternative libertaire, Mouvement des Objecteurs de Croissance, Nouveau Parti Anticapitaliste, Parti Communiste des Ouvriers de France The slaughter perpetrated atCharlie Hebdo editorial offices has caused a perfectly legitimate wave of indignation and anger, that we share. Our condemnation of this massacre, that aims at wreaking terror and silencing journalists defending freedom of speech, is total.
We condemn with equal determination the murderous antisemitic violence that has been unleashed against a cosher supermarket's customers.

This summer, Sarkozy and his guard-dogs are picking on the Roma and Gypsy communities, taking very smelly shortcuts to do so, and heap yet more abuse on a population that has undergone every persecution in History.

Josiane Nardi died after setting herself on fire, in front of the press, on October 18 in front of the prison in Le Mans, as a protest against the decision to deport her partner, currently held in the prison, to Armenia. This desperate gesture comes as a response to government brutality founded on the "quota policy", which continues to claim more expulsions and permanently criminalises immigration. [Français]

To begin with, let me make it clear from the outset that I consider the attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo to be an atrocity and that I do not believe that it is justifiable under any circumstances to make a military target of a journalist, no matter what our opinion on the quality of his journalism may be. The same is valid in France, as it is in Colombia or in Palestine. Also, nor do I identify with any fundamentalism, whether it be Christian, Jewish or Muslim, nor indeed with Frenchified mock-secularism either, which makes a goddess of the “République”. The local election campaigna has begun and the politicians are busy trying to outdo each other in racism. For two reasons: firstly, they think it's like stroking the electorate's hair, it's what they want to hear (what contempt!), and secondly, while the media are talking about it, the people are not wondering about unemployment, poverty and the distribution of wealth.
