ireland / britain / workplace struggles Wednesday May 11, 2005 21:53 bysovietpop 4 comments (last - sunday april 30, 2006 15:51)
Ireland is seeing a militant struggle by migrant workers fighting for the same pay and conditions as Irish workers. 900 Turkish workers and 300 Irish workers are employed by Gama. Under the Registered Employment Agreement for the Construction industry no worker can legally be paid less than 12.96 euros per hour. However Gama paid its Turkish workers as little 2.20 per hour.
The picture shows a Turkish worker carrying an Irish union banner on the Dublin Mayday march with the image of Jim Larkin on it. Larkin had been a migrant worker and IWW organiser in the USA in between being one of the main organisers of the early and militant general workers unions in Ireland.

The Workers Solidarity Movement is the Irish anarchist communist organisation who members are involved in anarkismo.net. It has been active on a wide range of issues in Ireland for over 20 years.
Like all good capitalists, in the face of the possibility that workers may get above their position, the CBI is calling on the state to bolster its power. By raising interest rates, they hope to drive weaker firms to the wall and, consequently, increase unemployment and so scare the remaining workers into keeping their heads down and work harder for longer.

Ireland - Migrant X refused an abortion and forced to have a C-section Aug 21 21:31 0 comments
This is as complete a story about what happened to 'Migrant X' that we are aware of. Migrant X is a young migrant women who it emerged was refused an abortion by the Irish state despite apparently meeting the grounds of the X-case legislation and instead forced to carry the pregnancy and agree to a C-section. The pregnanacy itself was the result of rape, Migrant X attempted suicide after being refused the abortion and later went on a hunger and thirst strike. Once what had happened to her became known there were sizeable pro-choice solidarity demonstrations called across Ireland and at Irish embassies overseas. We have been given information that the migrant woman at the centre of the current forced pregnancy was 'committed' to a psychiatric hospital following her initial request for termination. It’s already known that the initial request was made when she was 8 weeks pregnant. It was this crucial period in which she was being held incommunicado which led directly to the Caesarian option being possible to impose as an ‘alternative’ to allowing her to access the abortion she had asked for.

Into the Shadows - Britain’s dirty war in Ireland Dec 28 15:28 0 comments
The recent BBC documentary 'Panorama: Britain's Secret Terror Force' may have once again put a spotlight on the extent of British state-sponsored terrorism in the North and the activities of its various shadowy forces; but the level of orchestration, impunity, collusion and cover up is yet to be truly uncovered.
How Israeli diplomats tried to muzzle an Irish journalist Dec 19 18:57 0 comments
Could Israel be so determined to muzzle criticism of its crimes against the Palestinian people that it would flex its diplomatic muscle against a small Irish radio station? My inability to broadcast a regular international politics show on Dublin’s Near FM this month indicates that is indeed the case.
Report on WSM (Ireland) National Conference - Autumn 2013 Dec 18 20:50 0 comments
The WSM had its Autumn national conference in Dublin on the 23rd November. National Conference is the ultimate decision making body in the WSM. It happens every six months usually over a day or two. As well as discussing motions time is also spent on discussing the past six months activity and prospects for the next period. Conference also hears reports of activity from all branches, officers and working groups. This covered areas like the Irish Anarchist Review, WSM Website, Dublin Anarchist Bookfair and our pro-choice and anti racist work.

Céad Míle Fáilte*? Racial Profiling in the Ireland Oct 24 18:09 1 comments
Over the last couple of days we have witnessed massive media hysteria about the case of Maria, a young girl supposedly abducted by a Roma couple in Greece. DNA tests and Lombroso-style racial profiling have come into action in a case that has stirred the irrational anxiety that feeds racism and bigotry. Beyond the fact that child abduction is a serious issue, the "whiteness" and "blondeness" of the alleged victim have been emphasised together with the "Roma" condition of the alleged culprits. Let us remember that this is taking place in Greece, a country where blatant racism (as expressed by Golden Dawn) is on the rise, so there are good reasons to be cautious about this whole case.
Irish Travellers - Apartheid, Irish Style Oct 23 20:22 0 comments
In Ireland institutional racism has evolved to come fitted as standard. At the same time the State dithers about making the decision on whether or not to grant Travellers ethnic status. As the Stephen Lawrence family lawyer, Imran Khan stated – when you write laws of the land specifically for a people – it is a sure sign that you recognise them as a specific group when you bring in laws that pertain only to them. So, in Ireland, are Travellers specifically targeted in the Anti-Trespass Act brought in 2002 and Section 24 of the Criminal Justice Act (1994).

Lessons from the Mass Student strike in Quebec - Ireland tour September 2013 Sep 16 21:12 1 comments
In 2012 the attempt by the government to Quebec to introduce a 75% fee hike was defeated by the organisation of a mass student strike that lasted over 6 months. That fee increase was part of the global process of imposing the privatisation and commodification of education. Since the victory, organisers of the strike have been being doing speaking tours to aid the process whereby "youth and students everywhere are becoming increasingly conscious of the need to organize as a means to defend education as a social right". In September this tour reaches Ireland where we need to hear how a sustained and militant student movement that can win is built.
Internment, parading and the politics of class Aug 28 19:27 0 comments
The eruption of conflict and intense rioting in Belfast over the last couple of months is a clear illustration that, no matter what lengths Stormont and the media circus go to to disguise the ugly reality of the ‘peace process’, the scars of the past and frequent eruption of sectarian conflict refuse to go away as political parties play the sectarian card to get one over on their rivals.
In Place of Compromise - Why We Need a Rank and File Movement Aug 27 03:01 0 comments
Zabalaza Books is pleased to make available – in PDF – this classic text, by the (Platformist) Anarchist Workers' Group (AWG), active in Britain from 1988-1992: In Place of Compromise: Why We Need a Rank and File Movement (Huddersfield, Anarchist Workers Group, 1988). It deals with issues of anarchist strategy in relation to orthodox unions, provides an important analysis of the nature of trade union bureaucracies, and draws on the earlier history of rank-and-file syndicalism, notably the Workers' Committee Movement in Britain in the late 1910s. The AWG emerged from a split in the syndicalist Direct Action Movement (now the Solidarity Federation, or SolFed). It presented a strategy for militant work within the existing unions, rather than for building new pure (and tiny) alternative unions, or for boycotting or otherwise ignoring the existing unions. It must be noted that the AWG collapsed in 1992, and several of its former members moved to Leninism - a fact that has sometimes been absurdly used to suggest that platformism leads to Leninism. The choices of these individuals do not detract from the value of this pamphlet. For a balanced view of the fate of the AWG, see http://www.anarkismo.net/article/8452 and for other AWG texts, see http://flag.blackened.net/revolt/awg.html
Anti-choice extremists defeated in Ireland but new abortion legislation is worthless Jul 15 20:58 0 comments
Despite spending in the region of a million euro and getting the backing of the catholic church its now clear that the anti-choice extremists of Youth Defence & the Pro Life Campaign were resoundingly defeated when the Dail finally voted though legislation implementing the X-Case judgment of 21 years ago. This time last year they were confident that they already had enough Fine Gael TD's on board to block the required legislation but they reckoned against the wave of public anger that followed the death of Savita Halappanavar after she was denied a potentially life saving abortion in a Galway hospital.

The most successful G8 in Northern Ireland ever? Jun 21 09:38 0 comments
At the post G8 press conference, PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggot claimed the G8 summit in Enniskillen was the "most peaceful and stable" in its history. The G8 gangsters may have left dazzled and wined by our local political class but beneath the media spin and smokescreen lies the ugly reality of a new Northern Ireland of one rule for the rich and powerful while the rest of us must accept our place in the ladder, or face the consequences. We only need to look no further than the selective internment of Marion Price and others.

Stop laughing at the English Defence League May 30 19:58 0 comments
You've all seen the images doing the rounds on facebook of EDL members waving mis-spelt placards. Maybe you've liked or shared them on Facebook. I had the autotuned 'Muslamic Ray Guns' tune stuck in my head for ages even though it was politically problematic. While humour and ridicule can be an important political tool, much of the 'humour' in this vein is counter-productive to an effective anti-fascism.
Oppose the G8: Dealers of Austerity May 28 18:34 0 comments
The media charm offensive has began as our local corrupt political class roll out the the red carpet to the notorious gang of eight, dealers of austerity, state terror and imperialism. The beautiful, tranquil lakes of Fermanagh will be turned into a "ring of steel" with security fencing extending for miles, protected by an army of professional thugs and watchtowers to keep the rest of us plebs at bay.
Government legislation an attempt to bully trade unionists into voting for paycuts May 27 19:17 0 comments
The "Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Bill 2013", published by the government on Thursday last (23rd May), is a clear attempt to bully public sector workers into voting for the re-hashed terms of the Croke Park II deal emphatically rejected by them just a couple of weeks ago.
[English]

650,000 Homes STILL Not Paying Unjust Tax May 24 17:03 0 comments
In spite of a long and consistent campaign which has been waged against people in relation to the imposition of this unjust and unfair tax on homes, over 650,000 households have not registered with revenue [22.05.2013]. Draconian legislation and the threats of fines has not resulted in people volunteering their information to the revenue.more >>
