Updated information related to Carrie, Scott, and the Davenport grand jury. For those of you who have not read the posts here previously Carrie Feldman and Scott DeMuth are activists from Minneapolis, MN, who were subpoenaed to a federal grand jury in Iowa investigating animal rights vandalism from 2004. They both refused to cooperate with the grand jury, and were put in jail. Carrie is still being held on civil contempt of court. On 11/19, Scott’s civil contempt was dropped and he was indicted for conspiracy under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. Scott was released on 11/30 pending trial. ... read full story / add a comment

SUMMARY OF THE FACTS Last 15th of March, the COBP organised a demonstration for the International day against Police Brutality. The initial gathering point was the Mont-Royal subway station. The SPVM police force opted for provocation. They deployed a security cord to control and search bags of all the persons wanting to reach the gathering. The place was encircled by police officers on foot in anti-riot gear, as well as by police on horses. The police had also arranged fences around the area and closed off almost all the streets around the public square. Arrests were made even before the beginning of the march. Moreover, it is the deployment of the police force which imposed the trajectory of the demonstration, constraining it to leave towards the west on the street of Mont-Royal, and then to turn south on St. Denis.

... read full story / add a comment

The giant security apparatus being assembled for the Games has translated into many police state measures which are being used to suppress free speech. There is no doubt that the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games must provide a safe and secure environment for athletes, spectators, officials, local residents and all others involved. This should not be at the expense of those who seek to engage in anti-Olympic protests or other forms of peaceful activism and they should be free to do so without intimidation and fear.

The eviction blockade was a big success, thanks to everyone who turned out. But the struggle is far from over for Lenise and the rest of the families facing eviction this holiday season. Though CHA had indicated on Tuesday that they would ask management to work out a payment plan, now they are denying this and we may have to set the blockade back up at a moment’s notice. ... read full story / add a comment
