Not a day goes by in Egypt without demonstrations, strikes, sit-ins and clashes between workers and the police. Textile workers have been at the forefront of the struggles, as factory bosses are seeking to cut wages and pressure workers to leave. The most serious was the strike last month in Mahalla over low pay and rising prices. Agricultural bosses in Morocco are orchestrating a strong offensive against trade union rights. The current impact of the crisis should, according to them, be supported by farmers. The case of the company MARISSA (Franco-Moroccan private company owned by the AZURA group) speaks for itself. The global trade union representing textile workers today described as ‘inevitable mass murder arising from employer greed and official negligence’ the fire which raged through the Rosamor mattress factory in Casablanca on Saturday killing 54 workers. While the media remains in a huff over the roughing up of some reporters and some of Sec. of State Rice’s staff, forty prisoners from Darfur have started a hunger strike at the Kober prison in northern Kartoum and no one notices. The prisoners have been locked up for over two years without any formal charges or even accusations. They’ve never seen a judge in all that time.
