Yesterday, Wednesday 18th March, Congolese immigrant to South Africa and Coalition Against Xenophobia (CAX) activist and founding member Pastor Mulumba appeared for the second time at the Hillbrow Magistrates Court on charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. The more serious charge of attempting to steal a police firearm having been dropped at his previous appearance.

How bad do things have to be for a group of people to be afraid to leave their houses because la migra might pick them up and place their family members in separate detention centers to eventually deport them? Or that people crossing the border not only have to be concerned about the environmental dangers, but also the more recent upsurge of people who kidnap migrants, steal from them, assault them, and hold them for ransom. The police or ICE commit similar atrocities, but masquerading as heroes; “saving” the immigrants from the drop houses. Many citizens believe undocumented immigrants deserve the harm or misfortune inflicted upon them because they are here “illegally”. ... read full story / add a comment

TPS is a popular democratic demand for immigrants!
Halt deportations of Haitian immigrants!
Haiti’s political and economic situation is worsening. The tendency is for these conditions to worsen even more. The international financial crisis, compounded by a series of four deadly hurricanes in just one month last year, has worsened the living conditions in Haiti for the fundamental popular masses.
Sending anyone back to these conditions is not only inhumane but also unconscionable. THE DEMAND FOR TPS IS A CORRECT AND JUST DEMAND. It must be integrated into the popular democratic struggle of the masses in the belly of the US imperialist beast. ... read full story / add a comment

5 February 2009 Early in January, a Zimbabwean, Victor Zowa, and Omar Said from Tanzania, were murdered in the Durban City centre. The two immigrants were fleeing an armed mob who forced them to jump out a high-rise building. Another Zimbabwean, Eugene Madondo, survived the fall. Six people were arrested on the two counts of murder, for attempted murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. These are all schedule 1 offences for which a magistrate should only grant bail in exceptional circumstances. Yet, SAPA reports that the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday released five of the accused on R2,000 bail each. The sixth, Vusumuzi Khoza, an ANC eThekwini ward councillor, was released on the 28th of January for the same bail amount. ... read full story / add a comment

southern africa / migration / racism / non-anarchist press Monday November 24, 2008 - 19:19 byAnti-Privatisation Forum
The Anti Privatisation Forum joined with the Coalition Against Xenophobia at the 'Lindela Repatriation Centre' in Krugerdorp yesterday/today (22nd November) for a 24 hour picket calling for Lindela to be shut down. Our struggle knows no borders and we extend our solidarity to our African brothers and sisters who are being grabbed on the street, chased out of their homes and abducted to the deportation camp. The existence of the camp is a long-standing shame of democratic South Africa. Whether the 'Congress of the People' rightfully belongs to anyone in South Africa is a question void of any meaning when there is a complete unwillingness to confront the glaring racism, Afrophobia and violence that is Lindela. If South Africa 'belongs to all those who live in it', the principals on the throne of the Freedom Charter would be joining the Coalition to demand its closure. ... read full story / add a comment

South Africa is faced with an on going migration crisis, with over 3 million immigrants from Zimbabwe alone. This crisis is a result of hardships faced by Zimbabweans in Zimbabwe. This crisis has led to frustrations among the South African poor who have been forced to compete with the immigrant populations for basic resources and employment. In the recent past we have seen the ugly face of xenophobia, resulting in many deaths, massive displacement of the immigrant population and a large reverse migration of immigrants back into there poverty and war stricken countries. The South African police were unable to deal with the violence and the army had to be called in. ... read full story / add a comment

I shall argue for the replacement of the “race” formulation and the over-emphasis upon “white-skin privilege” with a “return” to the national question(s) framework and argue that no separate politics or forms of organizing that centers and emphasizes its focus upon whites is correct or efficacious, but arguably, harmful and hurtful to the cause of building working class unity and power within the U.S. ... read full story / add a comment
