Nella spirale caotica che avvolge il Medio Oriente dai tempi dell'invasione dell'Iraq, potenze locali e globali hanno dovuto ricorrere ad una serie di organismi, come l'ISIS, per sostenere le proprie richieste. Throughout the spiralling chaos in the Middle East which has started with the invasion of Iraq both local and global powers have required a number of bodies to serve their varying demands, such as ISIS. While it is acknowledged that the current situation under the present borders is redundant, no one has been able to name a new option. Today the struggle for people of conscience appears to be less about convincing people that Israel is committing war crimes against Palestinians or grossly violating international law. Instead the struggle has become about convincing the world that Palestinians are human beings too. The images from Gaza are searing, a gallery of death and horror. A dishevelled Palestinian man cries out in agony, his blood-soaked little brother dead in his arms. On a filthy hospital bed a boy of perhaps five or six screams for his father, his head and body lacerated by shrapnel. A teenage girl lies on a torn stretcher, her limbs awry, her face and torso blackened like a burnt steak. Mourners weep over a family of 18 men, women and children laid side by side in bloodied shrouds. Four boys of a fishing family named Bakr, all less than 12 years old, are killed on a beach by rockets from Israeli aircraft.

Nos sorprendió que entre las imágenes que nos llegaron sobre las protestas civiles contra el gobierno en Iraq, aparecían varias en las que podían leerse pancartas reivindicativas en castellano. Después, nuestros contactos nos revelaron que no se trataba de un error ni de una manipulación de esas que se hacen fácil con los photoshops de turno. Las pancartas en castellano con las que el pueblo iraquí trataba de llamar la atención internacional, eran la muestra de que un pueblo no olvida fácilmente la solidaridad de otro. Y fíjense que hablamos aquí de pueblos y no de estados, ni de países, ni de gobiernos. Los iraquíes recordaban las manifestaciones españolas en contra de la participación de su ejército en la invasión a Iraq y como estas protestas fueron clave para que las tropas españolas abandonaran después el país. Así que para los nuevos tiempos, nuevos y duros tiempos que corren, hicieron uso de esta memoria para llamar a la solidaridad. En pleno marasmo de declaraciones, especulaciones e interpretaciones de todo tipo sobre el proceso de paz entre el Gobierno de Turquía y el Partido de los Trabajadores del Kurdistán (PKK), Gara viaja a las montañas Qandil para hablar con la única parte que ha movido ficha en una partida jugada ya varias veces.

El encuentro se celebra en una pequeña aldea de las montañas Qandil, donde somos agasajados mientras esperamos la llegada del señor Ok. Ese es el protocolo habitual en la mayoría de los encuentros con la guerrilla kurda aunque, quizás, la atmósfera sea hoy más relajada que en ocasiones anteriores. Aparentemente, los vuelos rasantes de los helicópteros Cobra y los F16 estadounidenses han sido sustituidos por drones de factura israelí, que miran pero no matan.

«Ese ronroneo nos avisa de la llegada de un nuevo grupo de guerrilleros llegados desde Kurdistán Norte (bajo control turco)», bromea Hiwa Zagros. Su camisa azul celeste, impecable bajo su holgado uniforme verde oliva, recuerda que fue profesor de secundaria en Irán antes de unirse al maquis kurdo.

Tras varias horas de espera, Ok y su escolta de cuatro hombres bajan de un todo terreno para intercambiar besos en la mejilla y apretones de manos con todos los presentes. Sabemos que Ok tiene 54 años, y que 22 de ellos los pasó en la cárcel. También que estuvo varias veces en Oslo como integrante de la parte kurda, en unas negociaciones que despertaron grandes expectativas, pero que se desvanecieron como tantas otras veces.
