The Iron Column (Columna de Hierro)
Anarchist militia column raised in Valencia (Las Salesas) in 1936; it was particularly feared by a variety of communists and reactionaries and none too well-liked by the CNT leadership because of its ideological staunchness and commitment to social revolution and libertarian communism. ... read full story / add a comment

international / history of anarchism / other libertarian press Friday February 17, 2006 - 04:16 by Proudhon sympathiser
Proufhon esposed a practical and anti-utopian anarchism - An anarchism based upon a potential within actually existing society and not a doctrine or ideology to be imposed from outside. Since Proudhon's conception of anarchism was the original, and the others were derived from it, if the later varieties differed significantly from the original, perhaps there was a necessity to question whether these differences were of a positive or "progressive" nature. The history of anarchism is usually treated as a linear progression from the formative period of Proudhon to Bakunin's collectivism, then on to anarchist communism and syndicalism. But not everything which occurs at a later time in history is necessarily better or an improvement over what went before. ... read full story / add a comment

Federica Montseny was born 100 years ago this year in Madrid to one of the most influential anarchist families in Iberia.

"They shall not pass!
E'en should they win the day,
When men as yet unborn shall read the story,
They'll judge 'twixt those who stood in Freedom's way,
And us who died for her; whose is the glory.
It shall not be! Let them do what they may,
They shall not pass!"

In 1976, a group of young workers was expelled from the ORA and created the Union des Travailleurs Communistes Libertaires. They were supporters of a form of trade-unionism based on direct action and soon found themselves heavily involved in the resistance to the shift within the CFDT. [Français]

Μπορώ να γράψω ότι στη Βόρεια Κίνα όλοι οι σύντροφοι είναι νεκροί ή ότι παντού οι χωρικοί μας συμμερίζονται; Ότι έχουμε δέκα μέλη σε μια πόλη τριάντα χιλιάδων; Ότι οι εργαζόμενοι στους σιδηροδρόμους είναι μαζί μας, ή ότι ορισμένοι άνθρωποι μου φέρθηκαν με καλοσύνη; Οτι τα πανό μας ήταν στην κεφαλή της πρωτομαγιάτικης παρέλασης; Ποια είναι η αλήθεια, ποιο είναι το ψέμα; Είμαστε πολλοί ή είμαστε λίγοι; Πρέπει οι γραφειοκράτες να μην ανησυχούν για μας πλέον ή θα πρέπει να φέρουν πίσω τον αποκεφαλισμό για τις απόψεις μας;

imageAnarchists and Radicals in 1890’s Patras Sep 11 by Dimitris Troaditis 0 comments

In this article, Troaditis examines the transitional period between the appearance of the general socialist organisation Socialist Brotherhood and the forming of some clearly anarchist groupings. It’s a period that there is nothing remained from Democratic Association of the People (of 1870s Patras) as some of their members have either become moderate socialists or simply have disappeared, and a new and fresh wave of anarchists is starting to be visible in town. This moment is just a step before of the formation of the anarchist communist newspaper-collective “Epi Ta Proso” (“Forward”) in 1896.
