... read full story / add a comment

We awake to news that more towns in Ireland are under water due to storm flooding. And that perhaps the sea ice at the north pole might melt due to temperatures rising above zero. The first story is given a lot more prominence in Irish media than the second but strangely at the same time another story is being celebrated. The start of yet more greenhouse gases being pumped out of their safe place far below the sea off the Irish shore to be processed and then released into the atmosphere via the Corrib refinery (The refinery was sold off by the Irish Government to the Shell company for a fraction of what it is worth). ... read full story / add a comment

On Tuesday morning in the west of Irealand forty people from around Sruwaddacon Estuary in Erris brought Shell’s survey work in the area to a complete standstill when they walked out onto the mudflats at low tide to assert their cockle-picking rights and disrupt Shell’s borehole drilling survey. Shell has two barges drilling over 80 test holes in this Special Areas of Conservation, work that is opposed by the local community as part of their ongoing resistance to Shell's plan to run an experimental high pressure raw gas pipeline near their houses. ... read full story / add a comment

In Ireland you can really get pushed around by the establishment and some pretty powerful people when you tackle bloodsports. You don't have to be a red hot activist, or break the law in any way whatsoever. Anyone who takes a public stand against State-backed cruelty to animals (hare coursing and fox hunting) is liable to have his or her life turned upside down! ... read full story / add a comment

On the 18th of May Dublin Shell to Sea is going to escalate its campaign against Shell’s command centre – Corrib house on Leeson Street with another day of action starting at 7.30 am sharp. This attempt to shut down Shell’s HQ, like our last day of action (http://www.indymedia.ie/article/82200), is being called to highlight the incredible theft of our natural resources that totals 51 billion euros in the Corrib field alone. This is only possible with your help; we encourage everyone to come along. ... read full story / add a comment

Anarchists have been writing on ecological issues since, at least, the 1960s. Murray Bookchin, who died earlier this year, lead the anarchist concern about ecological destruction with such classic works as "Post-Scarcity Anarchism," "Towards an Ecological Society" and "The Ecology of Freedom." His warnings have come true to a threateningly worrying degree. Sadly, his solutions are still ignored but that is unsurprising as they go to the heart of the ecological problem, namely domination within humanity as the recondition for the domination of nature and the nature of the capitalist economy. ... read full story / add a comment

The economic boom in Ireland and the construction boom that has come alongside it has led to a growth in the importance of environmental campaigns. There has frequently been a large gap between the environmentalists involved in such campaigns and the left - including anarchists. Sean, one of the 'Carrickminders' and now a member of the WSM gives his view on what can be learnt from the recent struggles. ... read full story / add a comment

Towards a "sustainable environmental, economic and social system, agreed by the people of the planet.

For this to be remotely realisable a lot of people need to be empowered with a sense of their collective strength and this empowerment comes about through resisting capitalisms' impositions in our daily lives.

Moreover such practical involvement reveals more profoundly the truth about the nature of parliamentary politics, the Dail and the courts than acres of trees spent on subversive propaganda ever could. Furthermore popular struggle is the process which equips us all with the skills and organisational forms necessary to control workplaces freed of corporations, and to control communities freed of the state". - Terry ... read full story / add a comment
