The recent establishment of the Ministry of Higher Education; and the subsequent appointment of Communist Party General-Secretary, Blade Nzimande, as its head, in some circles, is viewed as proof that the Jacob Zuma administration is serious about delivering on its election promises relating to higher education. ANC aligned student and youth formations, under the banner of the 'Progressive Youth Alliance' (PYA) who, in recent times, have been at the forefront of strikes at many tertiary institutions, believe that Nzimande is almost a 'panacea' to the serious problems facing the sector, ranging from exclusions, shortages of accommodation, shortages of human and material resources conducive to learning and teaching. ... read full story / add a comment

Abahlali baseMjondolo has a yearly calendar. The last struggle of the year is usually against evictions because Christmas is always the worst time for evictions. Every year the first struggle is to get our children into schools. Before the movement was formed each family waged this struggle alone. Since 2006 we have run an annual back to school campaign. We run workshops informing people of their rights, we provide parents with fee exemption forms and help them to complete the forms, and we negotiate with schools and school governing bodies. We have to confront all kinds of discrimination against poor people and we have to confront racism. The first challenge is to get our children into schools. The second challenge is to ensure that our children are treated with dignity once they are in the schools. ... read full story / add a comment

... read full story / add a comment

... read full story / add a comment

COSAS must learn to understand that education is the finest foundation for nation building and it is the key for national development of any country. COSAS tendency of distributing lessons has become intolerable and it must revisit its tactics .At this pointing time with only few weeks left for the grade 12 to start with their final exams, the leadership of COSAS (including that of the PYA) has behaved in a holiganistic manner wasting learners time to study, mobilising them to support the African National Congress president Jacob Zuma on his corruption case at constitutional court. ... read full story / add a comment
