The residents of Kliptown (Soweto) under the banner of the Kliptown Concerned Residents are currently occupying the empty Pimville golf course townhouses. This decision was taken earlier in a mass meeting at the community center, where residents voiced their anger over poor service delivery and housing. The hundred year old informal settlement has been consistently ignored by the African National Congress government since it took power in 1994. Although Kliptown residents have undertaken many actions to highlight their plight, the government has chosen to play political games with the poor residents. ... read full story / add a comment

southern africa / community struggles / other libertarian press Monday November 03, 2008 - 15:36 by Matt Birkinshaw
For the first time in history more people in the world now live in cities than in rural areas. Globally one in five people live on land that does not legally belong to them. The UN predicts that this will rise to one in three by 2050. The future, to paraphrase Mike Davis, is not made of glass and steel, but of plastic, zinc and cardboard.

Rapid urbanization is outstripping the capacity and political will of local and national government to provide affordable housing or adequate infrastructure. This situation is heightened in middle-income countries such as South Africa, India and Brazil where cities such as Johannesburg, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro function as regional and global hubs. The urban struggle for land and housing is set to become a key area for future social change. ... read full story / add a comment

This structure was formed sometimes around 2005 amid overwhelming support from the community. After the local South African National Civil Organization (SANCO) has consistently suppressed anyone who questions the government and ruling party. Therefore we the people at Motsoaledi and many other communities across the country realized that "we need an alternative" because the only way we can and always have freedom and democracy is through exposing these emotional exploitations causing by these rich politicians in expressing ourselves. Without been in any academic institution or messiah and without talking amongst each other. We know we are the only alternative, we proved it by fighting the apartheid government. Again in the ANC government we were the first to speak loud against GEAR, Privatization on basic services, NEPAD, ASGISA, Gautrain and 2010. ... read full story / add a comment

Good News — Today, the Pavement Dwellers of Symphony Way finally met with Brian Denton, the deputy director of the Province's subsidy registration for the Department of Housing. He confirmed that almost all Symphony residents qualify for a housing subsidy. Yet, despite this good news, residents were invaded by the city of Cape Town's Land Invasions Unit and police who attempted to open a road that they had officially closed in February. They maintain that even though the road will remain closed, residents were not allowed to block the road. ... read full story / add a comment
