Bellegarde-Smith is a sought-after lecturer and expert, in addition to being regarded as one of the foremost experts in the field of African diasporic social thought, religion, and philosophy (he is the editor of the bookFragments of Bone: Neo-African Religions in a New World).

Toutefois, le gouvernement américain est étrangement et complètement silencieux là-dessus. Un trésor fait de 40 ans de câbles, nouvellement mis à jour par WikiLeaks, contribue à expliquer pourquoi.

Vers minuit, aux premières heures du matin du 23 juillet 1973, un incendie éclata dans l'arsenal bourré d'armes du palais national du dictateur haïtien Jean-Claude Duvalier.

Presque immédiatement, le «président à vie» Duvalier et son chef d'état-major, le général Claude Raymond, téléphonèrent au chef adjoint de mission à l'ambassade des Etats-Unis, Thomas J. Corcoran, pour lui parler de l'incendie et demander de l'aide américaine pour l'éteindre.

La destruction de la large cache d'armes d'Haïti devint, dans les jours suivants, l'excuse parfaite pour reprendre la vente d'armes militaires, ainsi que l'aide militaire assortie d'entraînement, à la dictature des Duvalier, vente interrompue pendant les années 1960 sous le régime de triste notoriété de François «Papa Doc» Duvalier.

Quels sont les facteurs qui influencent la répétition ou le retour incessant des mêmes problématiques sans qu'on y arrive à s'en sortir? Quelles sont les forces de freinage à la sortie de cette crise bicentenaire? Pourquoi les mouvements d'avant-gardes ne se sont-ils jamais trouvé une voix de sortie à cette crise? Pourquoi les forces progressistes ont-elles toutes échouées piteusement? Comment se sont-elles prises face aux forces rétrogrades pour mener leur combat? Ce sont là un ensemble de questionnement qui me trottait dans la tête. On a vu ailleurs des forces minoritaires dans la lutte sociale deviennent hégémoniques. En revanche, en Haïti, nos forces progressistes ne sont jamais arrivées à imposer leur point de vue; elles sont tuées dans l’œuf à leur premier balbutiement. Les idées d’un Edmond Paul au XIXe siècle en matière d’éducation et d’économie sont d’une modernité exceptionnelle. Il n’est pas étonnant par ailleurs qu’une œuvre aussi monumentale d’Anténor Firmin, soit De l’égalité des races humaines, éditée en 1885, n’a été rééditée qu’au début des années 60, 75 ans après sa parution. Ce n’est pas par hasard que ce long silence ait pu se produire. Les ennemis de la modernité ont voulu bannir de la mémoire ce géant de l’intellectualité haïtienne, battu à trois reprises (1902, 1908, 1911) dans la lutte pour la prise du pouvoir par les forces obscures (américaines, allemandes et haïtiennes) qui ont occupé les avenues du pouvoir depuis toujours. This factory produces goods for Gildan, one of the largest clothing companies in the world. Les deux chansons que le président Michel Martelly a exécutées en duo avec le chanteur Julio Iglesias le 28 décembre 2012 à l’amphithéâtre Altos de Chavon de La Romana, en République Dominicaine, sont en train de faire le tour du monde à la faveur des immenses facilités offertes par les médias sociaux. Ce qui aurait été il y a quelques années un événement d’intérêt essentiellement local est maintenant visionné dans les foyers du monde entier. Le spectacle d’un interprète de chansons à l’eau de rose accompagné du président d’un pays récemment dévasté par un terrible séisme, des ouragans à répétition et une épidémie de choléra est carrément désolant. The relative jubilee over Michel Martelly’s victory in the Haitian presidential elections after the statistical rearrangements by the Organization of American States soon after the primaries in March 2011 that had placed Martelly in second place was seen as a political intervention.
