Madrid saw significant riots on Tuesday as police attacked the tens of thousands of protesters who had surrounded the parliament building to protest the introduction of more severe austerity cuts. A WSM member from the Spanish state explains the context, what happened on Tuesday and the demands of 'En Pie', the movement which called the protest. The platform “En Pie” (Stand up), composed of a diverse group of left-wing political party members and 15M activists, had called a protest for the Tuesday 25th September at 19.00 in Madrid. The intent was to surround the parliament buildings (Congress) in the centre of Madrid, to show that democracy had been “kidnapped” by inept Spanish politicians, and to demand that all politicians inside resign and re write the Spanish constitution. ¨En Pie, Stand Up¨ is composed by a very diverse group of members of left wing groups and 15M activists. ... read full story / add a comment

El doctor Rodolfo Arango, en una reciente columna en El Espectador (29/08), titulada sin rodeos “Las Farc: ¿a quiénes representan?”, se refiere con esperanza a la negociación entre los insurgentes y el Estado. Esta columna constituye un interesante ejercicio en el que se busca conciliar, en el contexto de la negociación, el principio democrático de la “representatividad” con la supuesta “ilegitimidad” del movimiento guerrillero, según se desprende de las encuestas. Depuis la création de SAGE-UQAC (Service de l’association générale étudiante de l’UQAC), un conseil d’administration a été mis sur pied. Ce C.A a pour mission la viabilité financière du MAGE-UQAC, via la création de services dans les murs de l’université. Historiquement, le MAGE-UQAC n’a jamais été une association étudiante très combative; elle misait beaucoup plus sur la collaboration et le copinage avec les « gestionnaires » de l’université. Ayant été créée en 1969, l’UQAC a toujours accueilli énormément d’étudiants et étudiantes en administration. Ils et elles ont d’ailleurs été les créateurs et créatrices du MAGE-UQAC et de ses services. La vision entrepreneuriale de ceux et celles-ci a amené la base militante étudiante à déserter cette association étudiante puisqu’elle ne représentait pas ses intérêts et n’était pas fidèle à sa mission. ... read full story / add a comment

Les étudiantes et étudiants de l’UQAC sont aux prises avec une association étudiante générale, le MAGE-UQAC, constituée comme corporation de services, éteignoir de la contestation universitaire locale. Plutôt que droit acquis de chaude lutte (menée au niveau national), le MAGE-UQAC considère apparemment sa reconnaissance comme un privilège à conserver par une collaboration active dans les objectifs du rectorat; par la cooptation. De même, sa « défense des membres » passe essentiellement par les désirs passagers de fêtes et activités sociales et non, par la défense des intérêts réels étudiants, revendications historiquement définies depuis le mouvement d’occupations étudiantes d’octobre 1968. Au Mage-uqac tout comme à la FEUQ, le trou est béant, même carrément géant: le féminisme n’existe pas. Aucune de ces instances ne présente une forme, un embryon, un quelque chose aussi minime soit-il qui s’apparente au féminisme. Bien entendu, la FEUQ a développé quelques publications, par-ci et par-là, mais sous la rubrique ‘’Dossier’’, parmis les Droits d’auteur et les Finances publiques québécoises, aucune trace des revendications des femmes. Or, pour un syndicat étudiant, il est abérant voir inacceptable de faire fie des réalités de près de la moitié de ses membres. Once again talks of peace have been placed on the political agenda in Colombia, with the goodwill of a significant section of the establishment. This development in not a free gift nor does it come from the good will of the president: it is obvious that the thesis of “the end of the ending” lacked substance, and that the “Plan Colombia” has reached its limit. Although this agreement is a positive development, we cannot be excessively optimistic, even less so, triumphalist, considering that “peace”, in itself, would represent a triumph for the popular classes and their historic demands, blocked by fire and blood for more than half a century, by the State. We must bear in mind that the road towards an eventual negotiating process is full of difficulties, since there are substantial and basic differences between what the different parties expect from the negotiations and what the understand by the word “peace”.
