On Saturday, February 6th, 2009 at least 300, and by some estimates possibly as many as 500, people turned out in the city of Riverside California to demand an end to the raids, harassment, and racial profiling increasingly being conducted by US Border Patrol agents against the residents of our local communities and workplaces ... read full story / add a comment

Some of the people attacked in recent xenophobic pogroms in South Africa were born in South Africa or have a South African passport. Aren’t they South Africans? What makes a South African? How many generations must one have lived here to be accepted? What skin colour does one have to have? When thinking about this it quickly becomes clear that who is a South African and who is not is not a scientific decision. It is about what people think and want and this changes over time. ... read full story / add a comment

In the wake of racist remarks made by Toronto city councillor Rob Ford, where he essentializes Asians and rhetorically suggests a 'take over' by Asians, it is imperative that we look at the history of discrimination and racism directed towards the Chinese, perpetrated by governments and business interests, here in Canada. ... read full story / add a comment

... read full story / add a comment

Southerners champion a rugged work ethic. Nothing says “good ole boy” like a hard day’s labor, for the benefit of family. So why the hostility when Juanita and Hector come looking for work? The media claims we’re outraged, because jumping border fences shows disrespect for the law. Yeah, right. Pass the corn liquor, hand me the doobie, and tell me about Southerner’s respect for legality. No, the anger must have another source. ... read full story / add a comment

The Afghan hunger strike brought into sharp focus the new Ireland into which our country has been transforming over the last 10 years. Our booming economy and relatively high wage levels have drawn many thousands of immigrants into the country in search of a better life here. Much as the Irish once looked to America for the promise of a happier future, so many people from less well off countries now look to Ireland. ... read full story / add a comment
