Irish citizens voted against the EU Nice treaty in June 2001 briefly throwing a spanner into the works of the neoliberal EU agenda. The response was to force a second vote accompanied by a lot of scare mongering the following year. Shortly before the second referendum the pro-neoliberal media 'revealed' that the leader of the right wing anti-treaty campaign had been present at far right meetings in Germany, something that helped scare people into voting for the treaty second time around. Once more Irish citizens are voting on an EU treaty. This time around some months before the vote WSM member Chekov Feeny published this expose of the strange connections of another right wing anti-treaty group, an article that illustrates the inter imperialist rivalry between the supposed USA and EU 'allies'.. In part to seperate the anarchist 'No' campaign from the right but also to pre-empt a repeat of Nice 2 with such last minute 'revelations' being used to attack the no campaign in general. ... read full story / add a comment

For many years the experience of the Anarchist Workers Group in Britain was used to smear ‘platformists’ as some sort of authoritarian tapeworm within the body of anarchism. It was claimed that our politics leads people out of anarchism and into Leninism.

The emergence of the Anarchist Workers Group at the start of the 1990's was something the WSM welcomed. Most of the people involved initially came from the South London branch of the Direct Action Movement. At least one founder member of the ACF was also involved. They also had branches in the North of England with people from Manchester, Huddersfield and Liverpool. ... read full story / add a comment

Most people will be aware that Irish troops are being sent to Africa as part of an EU 'peace-keeping' mission to Chad and Central African Republic (CAR), but many will be relatively unaware of the background to the conflict and the reasons for the mission. This article looks at some of the realities behind the rhetoric and suggests some more plausible motivations for the intervention. ... read full story / add a comment

Christmas has increasingly become a matter of spending money on presents, rather than spending time with your loved ones. Where this might be hard for some, it can be financially unbearable for others. In order to meet the expectations from the society and avoid humiliation, we take up loans to get through family events such as Christmas. ... read full story / add a comment

When Irish Ferries launched their new €50million vessel in Dublin Port on Tuesday 29th January, 400 guests from the tourism, freight and shipping sectors attended the naming ceremony. How many of them, I wonder, took a moment as they quaffed their champagne and nibbled on their canapés to ponder on the news revealed by International Transport Workers Federation inspector, Ken Fleming, that the workers who would be manning the ferry will be paid as little as €4 per hour? ... read full story / add a comment

... read full story / add a comment

... read full story / add a comment

The victorious campaign to save the Crichton Campus has been one of the BIROC's biggest campaigns to date and easily
the biggest campaign fought by IWW Clydeside GMB and the new Glasgow
University job branch, and has involved civic groups, local
neighbourhood bodies, trade unions and political organisations from
across Scotland. The IWW has played a leading role in this campaign,
and it is necessary to reflect on this for the battles that lie ahead,
as well as to learn organisational lessons for our practice at the
moment.

The campaign is yet to write a collective response to the victory, and
some of the participants are taking a well-earned break from
campaigning activities. In the absence of this I've put together what
amounts to my personal take on the campaign (it's not a collective
statement - it's just my contribution) so that others can get some
handle on things, we can begin to debate things, and the wider movement
can begin to draw any relevant lessons. ... read full story / add a comment

In practice, the Grassroots Gatherings – and groups linked to them – have become the main (and the only continuous) networking of the “movement of movements” in Ireland. To date 10 gatherings have been held between 2001 and 2005. In keeping with the goal of autonomy and decentralisation, there has been no central committee; at the end of each gathering a group of activists has offered to host the next one in their own area and has got on with organising it in their own way, around an agenda set by themselves and with sometimes very different structures and themes. ... read full story / add a comment

When the Irish education system is taken into perspective, from preschool to 3rd level, each period of transition is flawed in its own way. Strong ties between the church, the state and our primary and secondary schools affect the growth and education of children from the moment they enter the schooling system to the moment they leave. "Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught."
