As forças sociais de Rojava se encontram cercadas na retaguarda pelo fechamento da fronteira com a Turquia. Antes da libertação da parcela síria do Curdistão, as linhas de traficantes de armas e abastecimento logístico dos jihadistas era alimentada (tolerada) pelo Estado Turco. Após julho de 2012, o YPG, milícia de autodefesa organicamente vinculada ao TEV-Dem (composição de forças sociais hegemonizadas pelo PYD (Partido da União Democrática) e que organiza a sociedade local) começou a fechar a fronteira na busca de uma autonomia regional.
