The origin of May Day, International Workers Day, lies in the historic fight for decent working hours that culminated in the execution of four trade unionists in Chicago, the United States, in November 1887. This was a decisive moment in the struggle for a just society through militant trade unionism. In Nigeria, May Day was first declared in 1980 by the People’s Redemption Party (PRP)-led government of the late Abubakar Rimi in Kano State. read full story / add a comment

Niger is the second poorest country in the world. Markets in some parts of the country are still full of produce. Yet a few minutes drive from these is the face of Niger which the world has seen -- starving people under canvas tents with aid workers trying their best to help them. The reason is simple -- poverty. People cannot afford to buy the goods in the market and so they go hungry. This, the bleak reality of Niger's famine, is noticeably absent from almost all of the media reports read full story / add a comment

There is always a temptation to welcome any well-intentioned efforts to make the world a better place and those who concentrate on criticising others' efforts to improve the world can find themselves being easily dismissed as cynics, knockers and “nay-sayers”. Thus, although large numbers of people probably found the idea of a movement against poverty and for social justice being fronted by some of the richest people on earth (Bono and Bill Gates to name but two) to be a little bit odd, most people acknowledged that they were 'at least doing something' and thus should be supported. However, it is important to ask ourselves what they were actually calling for and whether that was a good thing in itself. read full story / add a comment

The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), adopted by the African Union in Abuja, Nigeria, in October 2001, is nothing more and nothing less than a neo-liberal plan by Africa's elite to join with multi-national corporations, the IMF and World Bank to plunder Africa's labour force and resources. It is a consolidation of a range of a neo-liberal shifts by Africa's motley crew of ruling dictators, military chiefs, and capitalists. read full story / add a comment
