The Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF) and allies will be embarking on a march tomorrow (11th June) to coincide with the opening of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The march will start at 09h00 from Ben Naude Drive, opposite Fons Luminous Combined School Assembly Area and will proceed along the Rand Show Road/Aerodrome Drive towards Soccer City. The APF urges all community and other civil society organisations who share our concerns and who wish to add their voices, to join us.

The following is an urgent communication issued in solidarity with the Landless Peoples Movement (LPM) and other shack-dwellers of Protea South, Soweto. It is based on information obtained by telephonic and face-to-face conversations held with LPM members following violent attacks against them last night. There still seems to be confusion, however, and details are sketchy. Updates on the situation will be made available as and when they are received, as will be any factual corrections.

Even with all eyes on the World Cup, movements of the workers and the poor in South Africa must not forget that another challenge looms: the local government elections of 2011. And with the approach of elections, we are already seeing the return of the wave of authoritarians and opportunists of the left, all singing the same old song: if they are elected, they will somehow be able to do something about the problems of the workers and the poor. And while they may remix the song over and over, the tune remains the same: individual leaders, experts, or vanguards can find the answer; the mass movements of the people cannot liberate themselves. read full story / add a comment

southern africa / migration / racism / press release Wednesday April 28, 2010 05:57 by Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Front   image 1 image
We in the Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Front will shed no tears for the killing of the racist Eugene Terre'Blanche. Why should revolutionary workers lament the death of a thug who lived in nostalgia for the days when his emulation of Hitler and (empty) threats of war shook the whole country, and who never ceased to exploit and terrorise the black workers on a farm that should rightly be managed by those who work it to meet the needs of all and not be the property of any one single person? read full story / add a comment

The murder, apparently at the hands of two black farm-labourers, of thuggish AWB leader Eugene Terre’Blanche on March 20 in what was once South Africa’s white supremacist Western Transvaal heartland, was celebrated by anti-racists the world over. Inside South Africa, it had the expected result of dire, unfounded panic over a looming race war, and the unexpected result of the rush by mainstream parties to defend the ultra-right’s “right to exist in a democracy”. We hear a lot about race and continuing racism in post-apartheid South Africa, but who are the Boers, what function did the AWB serve the nationalist elites, and what does the debate over the killing reveal – or obscure – about the country’s forgotten poor whites? read full story / add a comment

southern africa / education / press release Saturday January 16, 2010 21:24 by Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Front
We condemn the recent unilateral decision by Wits management to no longer accept many Swazi students’ medical aid provider, Swazi Med, for the current academic year. This is an unfair move by the university so close to the registration period. It means an additional burden on students from one of the poorest and most authoritarian states in the world, many of whom come from poor backgrounds and study in South Africa not out of choice but necessity.

International students have to pay their full fees and medical aid for the whole year prior to registration which makes it nearly impossible for poor and working class students to enrol. read full story / add a comment

southern africa / community struggles / anarchist communist event Monday November 30, 2009 15:23 by Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Front   image 1 image
On the 26th of September this year a gang of heavily armed men launched an attack on the shack-dwellers movement, Abahlali BaseMjondolo, and organisers of the Kennedy Road Development Committee in the Kennedy Road settlement outside Durban. Members of the community spontaneously organised themselves in self-defence, and two people were killed in the clash. Thousands have been forced out of the township. After police stepped in to stop the self defence, the attackers systematically demolished the homes of AbM and KRDC members – with the police and local ANC leaders present! The political rivalry in KwaZulu Natal has exploited ethnic sentiment and tensions that emerged during the Jacob Zuma election campaign. There is a good case to suggest that African National Congress (ANC) in and around Kennedy Road is using ethnicity to mobilise local residents against popular social movements such as Abahlali.. The Kennedy Road attackers shouted slogans such as "The AmaMpondo are taking over Kennedy. Kennedy is for the AmaZulu." 13 people – all associated with Abahlali, and all Xhosa – have been arrested in connection with the murders, even though they were not the perpetrators of the attack, but its victims. They are facing false murder charges and have been held for two months without bail in the notorious Westville prison. Recently, a similar situation has arisen in Pemary Ridge, another settlement in the area, where key activists continue to receive death threats and remain in hiding after a police attack.

At the end of October a visiting speaker from the South Africa ZACF was hosted by the WSM in Dublin and Cork. The audio of the Dublin talk will be found below. The opening section of the talk looks at the very recent repression of the shack dwellers movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo at the Kennedy road informal settlement. Several people were killed and over 1000 displaced when an ANC led gang targetted the settlement and a meeting that was in progess there. read full story / add a comment
