north america / mexico / community struggles / news report Monday June 20, 2011 14:38 byJericho
On Saturday, June 18th, dozens of anarchists and other community members staged an angry protest against gentrification and green capitalism at Greenbridge, a “green” development of condos for eco-yuppies. Demonstrators held banners outside while others occupied the lobby in an expression of outrage against the displacement of renters from the neighborhood. Three people were arrested and charged with felony “inciting a riot” and misdemeanor property destruction, and have been released on bail. The demonstration drew attention to the ongoing tolls inflicted by the development, which was built by a coalition of multi-millionaires over the protests of community members to profit off the bourgeois craze with all things “green.” But money is the only thing green about Greedbridge, as it has been nicknamed by neighbors. read full story / add a comment

A family member of mine recently sent me an article from Vanity Fair by economist Joseph Stiglitz about the problem of elite control within the United States.  While it's refreshing that the article is talking about the problem to a mainstream audience, it stops short of delving deep enough the problem at a systemic level, and perhaps more importantly: doesn't address the need for complete systemic change.  The broader points that Stiglitz brings up are also supported by the Economic Policy Institute - an economics resource that has some great research reports on the topic of how government policy has favored the elite - including: a report showing how the budget cuts proposed in comparison to the tax cuts given and another showing how recently all economic gains have gone to the top 10% (with over 75% of those gains going to the top 1%).  read full story / add a comment

Recently our new organization First of May Anarchist Alliance initiated a website and brought out several documents that help describe our views and approach, some of which may be controversial among the present anarchist and left movements and scenes.

Over the last year the Michigan-Minnesota Group has begun to reconstitute ourselves from a long-time affinity group into an anarchist organization of struggle, First of May Anarchist Alliance (M1). We aim to build a trans-continental anarchist organization that is firm on anarchist core principles, adaptable to changing terrains of struggle with a mind set open to new ideas, influences and techniques. We intend to participate in a range of anti-authoritarian and anarchist formations as well as carry out our own independent work in broader arenas. We have some specific concerns and points of view that warrant an organized existence independent of any existing group.

The following statement is by no means a comprehensive or detailed elaboration of our views. Its purpose is to give people some sense of where we are coming from.

M1′s affinity is built around four principles:
1) a commitment to revolution
2) a working class orientation
3) a non-doctrinaire anarchism
4) a non-sectarian and multi-layered approach to organization read full story / add a comment

Mayday is not only a time to remember the sacrifices of so many before us who fought against all authority – capitalism and the state, patriarchy and white supremacy, empire and ecocide – but also a time to reflect on and celebrate the achievements of our movements today. In recent months the world has again been changed by the actions of masses of ordinary people. read full story / add a comment
