The heroic masses of Egypt have risen up against the decades-old corrupt dictatorship of Hosni Mubarak. Taking inspiration from the intifada in Tunisia, for six days, Egyptian protesters have been demanding that Mubarak be ejected from the office he has held for 30 years, demanding affordable prices for basic foods, and demanding jobs. Close to 200 protestors have been murdered by the security forces as they attempt to exercise their democratic rights. As South Africans watch the unfolding events in the north of our continent, it reminds us too of our own uprisings: Sharpeville, Soweto, Langa... and spurs us on to express our solidarity with the people of Egypt and Tunisia who remain steadfast in their determination to rid themselves of corrupt and oppressive dictators. read full story / add a comment

No dia 18 de Dezembro, a polícia Tunísiana abordou Mohamed Bouazis, um graduando universitário desempregado, e confiscou o carrinho de mão de frutas e vegetais que ele estava vendendo para se sustentar e à sua família. Enfurecido pela injustiça e desesperando de conseguir escapar da destituição e fome prevalecentes na economia empobrecida da Tunísia, cada vez mais assolada pelo aumento dos preços da comida, o jovem homem se incendiou em protesto na frente da prefeitura de Sidi Bouzid, 200km de distância da capital Tunis. Despite blanket media coverage of Wikileaks and Julian Assange, there has been little discussion of the fact that Assange is merely one leader within a large and complicated social movement. The better analyses have found it interesting that the Swedish Pirate Party are aiding Wikileaks; some note links to the German Chaos Computer Club. But only “geeks” and “hackers” (technology workers) are aware that all of these organisations are members of the same movement. read full story / add a comment

En un comunicado distribuido hoy, 4 sindicatos autónomos argelinos (CLA, de enseñanza, SATEF, enseñanza profesional, Coordinación de las secciones CNES, enseñanza universitaria, y SNAPAP, de la administración pública en general), junto con la Liga Argelina de Defensa de los derechos humanos (LADDH), declaran su apoyo a la rebelión de la juventud argelina, proponiendo un encuentro nacional para discutir las acciones que deben llevarse a cabo para aportar su ayuda, apoyo y solidaridad a esta juventud. En los últimos días, numerosas organizaciones argelinas se están pronunciando en solidaridad con las protestas en la calle. This is a discussion of two approaches employed in organizing at the mass level: mobilizations and mass movements. Mobilizations typically entail calling on people to participate in rallies, protests and other actions. El conflicto entre el pueblo palestino y las fuerzas de seguridad del Estado de Israel se ha desarrollado durante muchos años y ha sido cubierto profusamente por los grandes medios de comunicación. Sin embargo, muy poca gente es capaz de explicar la situación actual que se vive en los territorios palestinos o de dar cuenta de las diferentes facciones existentes, así como de las consecuencias de los actos realizados por el ejército de Israel. En un año marcado por el reinicio de la construcción de asentamientos israelíes en los territorios palestinos ocupados, los ataques y bombardeos de la Franja de Gaza y un nuevo intento de diálogo impulsado por los EE.UU., creemos que se hace indispensable buscar la manera de que sean los mismos protagonistas de esta lucha quienes nos expliquen lo que sucede, buscando de esta forma dar a conocer un punto de vista, el de la resistencia palestina, que es sistemáticamente negado u ocultado por los medios de comunicación oficiales. In Italia, siamo di fronte ad un evidente deperimento dei livelli di democrazia nel paese, le cui espressioni sono rinvenibili a livello istituzionale e sociale: nella concentrazione di potere nell'esecutivo, con conseguente tendenza autoritaria tramite il ricorso usuale ai decreti legge ed alla delegificazione; nel declino del potere legislativo del parlamento a semplice esercizio di ratifica dell'operato del governo e delle decisioni prese nelle alte stanze del potere, dove avviene la collusione e la connivenza tra l'esecutivo e le varie oligarchie economiche e la ricomposizione degli interessi dei vari settori della borghesia italiana; nell'attuale uso del parlamento contro il potere giudiziario; nella distruzione della rappresentanza delle minoranze a favore dell'omologazione degli interessi borghesi.
