There has been a flood of books about the Great Recession of 2007-2009 and the limping "recovery" which we are now living through - which the liberal economist Paul Krugman has called a "depression". Of the many works, one of the more interesting is by Foster & McChesney (2012). Among its several virtues are its clarity of style, rare among economists of any orientation. The chapters began as separate articles in the left magazine, "Monthly Review", of which Foster is the editor. (This causes some repetition.) It is a continuation of the previous book, The Great Financial Crisis: Causes and Consequences (Foster & Magdoff, 2009; reviewed by me: Price, 2010). read full story / add a comment

Since the birth of the organised labour movement there have been intermittent claims that some alteration in the conditions of workers had rendered class struggle irrelevant or who suggested that class stratification meant that different workers had different interests and thus could not take united action. This was apparent in the struggle between craft unionism and syndicalism in the days of Connolly and Larkin, or the mantra that “the class struggle is over” in more recent times.

Black Cat Press is blij dat het de publicatie kan aankondigen van "Revolution" door Carlo Cafiero, voor het eerst in het Engels (inderdaad, het is ook nog nooit als een volledig boek in het oorspronkelijke Italiaans verschenen!). Het boek brengt wat zeker Cafiero's meest volledige, oorspronkelijke werk is, voor een Engels-sprekend publiek voor het eerst. Het is ook een extreem belangrijk werk, in die zin dat het een van de vroegste pogingen is om een volledig theoretisch inzicht te geven over het revolutionaire ideaal van het anarchistische communisme. Βολεμένοι στα ρετιρέ τους, μετρούν τα δολάρια που εισρέουν από τα εκατομμύρια σαν κι αυτόν, και γελάνε πονηρά με την ευκολία με την οποία συντρίφτηκε η αντίσταση.
