Anyone who has been active on the left and broader labour movement will have faced the 'million dollar question from republicans on the 'national question'. The question of opposition or indifference to the partition of the island is often thrown by republicans like a dagger in the direction of the existing left. In responnse many become either wedded to the romantic idea of the flag removing all our sins or face the jibe of being a ‘gas and water socialist’ or at worst a sop to unionism. It’s the type of choice you get at Stormont every four years where you get to choose between Coca Cola and Pepsi. Equally it’s the type of approach of the PSNI press statement that presents every ’dissenter’ from the status-quo as being wedded to physical force republicanism. The sudden end of the Gaddafi regime some 6 months after the start of the Libyan revolt leaves some difficult questions unanswered for the left. Gaddafi’s determination to physically crush the revolt quickly transformed it into a civil war, a civil war that saw considerable imperialist intervention on the rebel side, intervention that was essential to their eventual victory. This and Gaddafi’s historic record led to some on the left taking his side in the civil war while other organisations tried to balance support for the ‘Arab spring’s’ arrival in Libya with opposition to imperialism. In this article, using an anarchist analysis, it will be argued that this lopsided trade, expansive investment and projection of state power by the South African ruling class are signs of the imperialist role they play in southern Africa. In undertaking this, it will be outlined how the South African ruling class, as an integral part of their imperialist role, are conducting a class war against the workers and the poor across sub-Saharan Africa. Through examining this class war, it will hopefully become clear that the South African state is being used as a key instrument by the ruling class – made up of capitalists and high-ranking state officials – to further their own interests in southern Africa. The consequence of highlighting the imperialist nature of the South African state also has implications for the strategies and tactics that should be used in struggle. It will be strongly argued that due to its hierarchical centralising and expansionist ambitions, the state cannot be used as a tool for liberation in South Africa or in the region. read full story / add a comment

De aller fleste har kanskje fått med seg at Libya er et av de mange stedene i Midtøsten som har sett store sosiale opprør. There are four main areas of struggles the AAtW activists are involved with: Joint struggle with communities that invite us to join, like Bil'in and other struggles against the separation fence. Other joint struggles against occupation and settler colonialists like Nabi Salih. Joint struggles with wider coalitions like the Sheikh Jarrah coalition and South Hebron. The fourth is within Israel, like prison and jail solidarity, Al Araqeeb and Lod. It seems that our confrontational and direct-action mode of struggle is being adopted by more and more Israeli radicals. read full story / add a comment

Το παρακάτω κείμενο, γραμμένο εδώ και τρία χρόνια έχει βρει το δρόμο του για έκδοση μέσα σ αυτό το καλοκαίρι, από τις εκδόσεις ‘Πανοπτικόν’. Ύστερα από τις εξελίξεις στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο ανοιχτά της Γάζας, ο εκδότης του περιοδικού Κώστας Δεσποινιάδης μου τηλεφώνησε και με προέτρεψε να το αναρτήσω στο διαδίκτυο θεωρώντας το δραματικά επίκαιρο. Προχωρώ στην έκτακτη δημοσίευσή του συμμεριζόμενος την ανησυχία του. Πρόκειται για έναν αριθμό σχολίων πάνω στη φύση και στο χαρακτήρα της Ισραηλινής Κοινωνίας. Ελπίζω έτσι να ριχτεί λίγο φως σε κάποιες ψυχικές περιοχές του ισραηλινού προβλήματος οι οποίες μέσα στο σκοτάδι παραμένουν απίστευτα ενεργές και γι αυτό ιδιαίτερα επικίνδυνες. Πιστεύω ότι η οργή και η καταγγελία είναι επαρκέστερες όταν συνοδεύονται από την κατανόηση των αιτιών και της φύσης μιας απειλής που έπαψε πλέον να περιορίζεται ενάντια σε ένα περιθωριοποιημένο λαό και αρχίζει να στρέφεται ανεξέλεγκτα προς οποιονδήποτε, με ανομολόγητο σκοπό να παγκοσμιοποιήσει έναν ‘τοπικό’ πόλεμο.
