Founder of the Uruguayan Anarchist Federation (FAU), an especifista anarchist organisation, Alberto "Pocho" Mechoso was also a unionist in the Meat Workers Federation and an active militant of the Organización Popular Revolucionario Orientales – 33 (OPR-33), the armed wing of the FAU that supported strikes and conducted kidnappings and expropriations of employers to finance the struggle.
In his later years, "Pocho" was active in the Popular Party for Victory (PVP), an organisation that dissolved the FAU within it. "Pocho" remained together with other comrades of the FAU within the PVP with the intention of re-establishing the especifista organisation.
Arrested in Buenos Aires on September 26, 1976, his body was found with seven others on the seabed, in barrels filled with cement, on May 23, 2012. We remember this comrade who, even without having known him, is very dear to us. His example will be present in our militant struggle, today and forever.

La lucha continúa, porque la injusticia también lo hace. Y aunque en el Uruguay de hoy la torta crezca, son poquitos los que se están llevando lo más grande. Para el pueblo, las migajas, mentiras y por las dudas, represión. Y mientras las desigualdades se profundizan, el discurso político y mediático se vuelve cada vez más reaccionario y policíaco. Van al seguro de paro cientos de compañeros de la industria textil, también van cientos de Pluna, pero el inversionista, aunque la empresa se funda, siempre sale bien parado, sobretodo si tiene amigos en el gobierno. read full story / add a comment

I’ve just come back from visiting the Kate Sharpley Library in California. Things have changed from the days when I could get there on the bus and we were buying our first filing cabinet. Lots of filing cabinets now, as well as boxes like the Left Bank Books archive. It’s good to look at the non-fiction shelves, seeing ‘old friends’ and new acquisitions. read full story / add a comment

Η Ισπανική επανάσταση ακολούθησε το αποτυχημένο φασιστικό πραξικόπημα του Φράνκο στις 18 Ιουλίου του 1936. Το πραξικόπημα που υποστηρίχθηκε από συντηρητικούς κύκλους του μεγάλου κεφαλαίου και της εκκλησίας απέτυχε στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της Ισπανίας όπου αντιμετώπισε την ένοπλη αντίσταση αγροτών και εργατών. Στη μέση ενός φοβερού εμφύλιου πολέμου πάνω από εξήντα εκατομμύρια στρέμματα εδάφους απαλλοτριώθηκαν και τουλάχιστον δυο χιλιάδες αυτοδιοικούμενες κολεκτίβες σχηματίστηκαν μεταξύ του Ιουλίου του 1936 και του Ιανουαρίου του 1938. Περίπου εφτά με οκτώ εκατομμύρια ανθρώπων άμεσα ή έμμεσα επηρεάστηκαν από την κολεκτιβοποίηση και σχεδόν 60 τοις εκατό του εδάφους της Ισπανίας επηρεάστηκε από αυτήν την διαδικασία [Spanish Anarchism: an introductory essay, p. 60]. read full story / add a comment

Sembra incredibile che - a 55 anni - ciò che si è, intensamente, vissuto in gioventù diventi oggetto di studio e di ricerca nell'ambito della ... Storia contemporanea. Eppure è quello che è avvenuto con la pubblicazione della tesi di laurea (in Storia contemporanea) di Luca Lapolla - intitolata "Gli anarchici di piazza Umberto - la sinistra libertaria a Bari negli '70" - in cui si descrive la nascita, lo sviluppo e l'inesorabile declino dell'ORA (ma a noi piaceva dirlo "alla francese" con l'accento sulla A) ovvero "la microstoria di poche decine di anarchici che stavano da tutte le parti, che amavano fregiarsi con grande serietà del nome di organizzazione rivoluzionaria con tanto di sezioni in tutta la Puglia - tanto per scrollarsi di dosso qualche stereotipo che vede gli anarchici sempre disorganizzati - e che se la giocavano alla pari per seguito ed influenza con le altre formazioni della sinistra extraparlamentare". read full story / add a comment
