Analysis of the events in Honduras and the dilemma of the oligarchy of Honduras in the face of an unsustainable coup: whether they cling to the strategy of the Gorillas (putschists in Latin American jargon) or they use the situation created by the coup in order to wear off the reformist Zelaya, in order to re-conquest the absolute hegemony in the political arena. The dilemma facing those who opposed the coup is also put forward: whether we allow the crisis to be solved in a top-down fashion, at the level of institutions, what would leave intact the roots of the problem, or we defeat the coup through mass mobilisation of the people, what not only would be a fatal blow for the oligarchy, but would also strengthen the Honduran working class as an important political actor in its own right.

Workers are demanding the ratification of a minimum wage adjustment of 200 Gourdes that the Haitian Parliament has passed since May 5th. Workers, for some time now, have been demanding a minimum wage hike. The Préval/Pierre-Louis administration is asking for another round of negotiations. This is just a political maneuver to demobilize workers, accompanied by a high level of repression, such as against the recent May Day marches and the June student rallies.

In every social formation, the working class faces the daily ruthless exploitation and domination of the capitalist class. Other classes in capitalist society or capitalist dominated society also face the wrath of bourgeois domination but the working class is one of the classes that deals both with domination and exploitation, giving the working class an historical role in bringing humanity to a much higher form of social relations based on a classless society. This special relation of the workers to capital allows the working class movement to combat the petit bourgeois interpretation of bourgeois democracy. read full story / add a comment

The effects of the occupation on the people have been disastrous. We have already included a detailed analysis of these in various other articles. The main effect has been that it has deepened, by force, hunger, misery and exclusion. And it has deepened to such an extent that in April 2008, following grotesque news that Haitians had no other option to ease their hunger other than to resort to eating mud and dirt, rebellions exploded all over the country because the people, literally, were starving to death.
