1968 till now...
This period is most important. Many things happened in this period that were totally different from the previous periods. This was not abnormal. Imperialist domination was consolidating and the general situation of the social formation was reaching a more critical stage.
Two important conditions marked this period. The Haitian dominant classes, especially the bourgeoisie, totally aligned themselves with the Duvalier regime. This rallying happened in a period of extreme, extensive and consistent repression on the working class movement, as well as the progressive cultural movement between 1961 to 1965. Soon after, the repressive Duvalier regime organized another period of heightened repression against progressives and communists, from 1967 to 1969. The secondary contradictions existing between Duvalier and imperialism were slowly becoming resolved. The American government consolidated its relations with the regime. Imperialism resumed economic and military aid. read full story / add a comment

95 years of domination is enough. Haiti is in worse shape than ever. Who needs help like this.Since capitalism reached the stage of imperialism, many imperialist countries started to develop relations with Haiti. From the onset, these relations were nothing else but relations of domination.
In order to better advance, I will divide this analysis into three periods.

america centrale / caraibi / imperialismo / guerra / intervista Thursday February 04, 2010 21:22 by José Antonio Gutiérrez D.   image 1 image
On January 28th, we had the chance to have a telephone talk with Camilla Chalmers, from the Plateforme Haïtienne de Plaidoyer pour un Développement Alternatif (Haitian Platform in Defence o fan Alternative Development, PAPDA), in Port-au-Prince. Here we transcribe the questions and answers we could exchange in spite of the natural difficulties of communication in these circumstances. We believe his opinions represent a contribution to understand what’s really going on in Haiti, they contradict the official version of the media and give us a very precise notion of the type of solidarity that the Haitian people need –and that we should not fail to give. What is being offered by the "Friends" of Haiti? Just more militarization, more debt, more sweatshop-style economic "development", new slums and more social exclusion.

Haiti seems to be the latest victim in the US efforts to recompose its imperialist hegemony in Latin America. Of course this direct US occupation is creating some friction with others that have interest in Haiti: France and Brazil, but that’s why the so-called “friends of Haiti” will meet in Canada on Monday 25th to deal with their differences and decide what way forward for Haiti –of course, without any real involvement of Haitians themselves.

The Haitian people and those who stand in solidarity with them, have to confront those who want who use this tragedy to rebuild the Haiti of the military occupation, the Haiti of the sweatshops and desolate fields, a Haiti where people starve and eat mud-cookies or a Haiti where makoutes are still masters of the streets in the major cities. We do not want to rebuild the Haiti of the sex tourism industry, or the Haiti of the neo-Duvalierist oligarchy, or a Haiti of chronic illiteracy. Nor are we interested in re-building a Haiti where children die before they are men or women from all sorts of preventable diseases. That is the Haiti which the missionaries of the rifle and the chequebook want to build. That Haiti, the Haiti described by Eduardo Galeano through his insane “geography” will hopefully remain buried forever. read full story / add a comment

As predictions for the death toll from the Haitian earthquakes rise over 200,000, ABC News have reported that planes carrying medical equipment and relief supplies are having to compete with soldiers for the valuable slots at Port-au-Prince airport which was taken over by the US military after the quake. Since the start of the great anti-slavery republican insurrection nearly 220 years ago, Haiti has been presented as a dangerous place incapable of running its own affairs and requiring foreign intervention. Yet the reality is its people were the first enslaved population to deliver themselves from slavery and also carried out what was only the third successful republican insurrection on the planet. The threat of this good example was rewarded with centuries of invasion, blackmail, the robbery of Haiti's natural resources and the impoverishment of its people. This articles summarizes that history of intervention and the resistance to it in order to put into context what is happening in Haiti after the quake. read full story / add a comment

Note- The following views expressed by Camille Chalmers of the Plateforme Haïtienne de Plaidoyer pour un Développement Alternatif (PAPDA) in our opinion represent a good starting point to think of a comprehensive strategy of solidarity with the Haitian people, now suffering terribly by the earthquake and the completely inefficient relief thus provided, that has translated more than anything in a deeper occupation and militarization of Haiti. read full story / add a comment

imageFidel Castro (1926-2016) Dec 02 by Samuel Farber 0 comments

After a long illness that forced him to withdraw from office in July 2006, Fidel Castro died on November 25. Castro had previously survived many U.S. efforts to overthrow his government and physically eliminate him including the sponsorship of invasions, numerous assassination attempts and terrorist attacks. He held supreme political power in Cuba for more than 47 years, and even after having left high office he continued to be politically engaged for several years meeting with numerous foreign personalities and writing his Reflexiones in the Cuban Communist Party press. In light of a likely future state capitalist transition and the role that foreign capital and political powers such as the United States, Brazil, Spain, Canada, Russia and China may play in it, the prospects for Cuban national sovereignty—perhaps the one unambiguously positive element of Fidel Castro’s legacy—are highly uncertain. [Italiano] [Castellano]

imageFidel Castro (1926-2016) Nov 30 by Samuel Farber 0 comments
