O ataque com drone realizado pelos Estados Unidos no Iraque, ocorrido no dia três de janeiro de 2020 incendiou o Oriente Médio, abrindo maiores possibilidades a respeito da escalada das tensões entre a República Islâmica do Irã e os Estados Unidos da América. Isso aconteceu pelo fato de entre as vítimas do ataque, estar o tenente-general Iraniano Qassem Soleimani, chefe da Guarda Revolucionária do Irã (IRGC) e da Força Qods (conhecida como Força Expedicionária, destacamento da Guarda revolucionária responsável por operações no exterior) assim como o comandante das Forças de Mobilização Popular (PMU da sigla em inglês, al-Hashdi ash-Sha’bi), Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, uma das mais importantes milícias iraquianas, estabelecida para garantir o recrutamento massivo inter-étnico e inter-religioso. read full story / add a comment

Historically labour has always found itself at the unfortunate end of the table, denied the fruits of
its labour. Organised labour has, therefore, always tried to alter the balance of power in society.
Sometimes unions have attempting to align with state power, to try push it towards the side of
the workers. Sometimes unions have instead developed organisational strategies that look
beyond state power. In India, as elsewhere, “political unionism” – where unions support a
political party aiming at state power – has been very common.
This short article will critically discuss the history of “political unionism” in India. It will argue
the need for a change in the strategic outlook of unions, towards working outside the state,
building movements that refuse to participate in the state but aim instead to pressure it for reform

Every day and in every part of India, hundreds of thousands of people – mainly young people – gather on the streets to express their anger at the government. Their protests, like those of the protests in Chile, emerged out of one particular grievance but then have cascaded outward. On December 13, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights released a powerful statement that criticized India’s new citizenship law. This “fundamentally discriminatory” Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019 would expedite citizenship for persecuted religious minorities from India’s neighboring countries. But in the list of those minorities, it names only Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians. It does not mention Muslims, despite the fact that there have been several important cases of Muslims being persecuted in Pakistan (the Ahmadis), in Afghanistan (the Hazaras), and in Myanmar (the Rohingya). The UN said that not only does this law violate India’s obligations to conventions, treaties, and compacts that it has signed at the global level, but also that it is in violation of its own constitution. read full story / add a comment

The Melbourne Anarchist Communist Group believes that the School Strike for Climate movement has great potential and that it should be joined wholeheartedly by the unions. School strikes should be turned into workers’ strikes. In Australia, the next global school strike day should be the occasion for mass co-ordinated strikes by workers from as many industries as possible, with the aim of building towards a general strike.
