On Sunday 13, the constituent committee of the Egyptian Federation of Independent Trade Unions issued a statement calling on Egyptian workers to leave the government union and begin building their own unions. This appeal is a continuation of the mass strikes of workers, which also affected key sectors of the Egyptian economy such as armaments factories, cement factories and steelworks and have been a key factor in recent events - neglected by the media which has focused almost exclusively on Tahrir Square.

Here in the US we live at the heart of the capitalist empire. More than any other people in the world, we have the opportunity, and the responsibility, to derail the imperial machine. This year the IMF and World Bank will once again begin their spring meetings on April 16. The IMF Resistance Network invites all enemies of neoliberal capitalism to join us in the streets of DC to fight for a just and free world. read full story / add a comment

Instead of defeat, we can move forward. We support the popular call promoted by the Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.) revolutionary union and others for a state-wide General Strike. This should include public and private sectors, union and non-unionized sectors, students and unemployed. As other communities and sectors of the working-class step forward to join the struggle they must be free to raise their own specific concerns and demands. The movement must be open to “speakers from the floor”. We must resist any pressure to reduce the movement to a small number of lowest common-denominator demands that favor relatively privileged layers and that the system finds acceptable. This movement must not be satisfied with a return to the status quo but formulate demands of our own for what the people actually need. read full story / add a comment

The Solidarity Sheikh Jarrah loose front of Zionist left, humanist religious trend, crystallized and expanded mainly to the annexed East Jerusalem and within 1948 borders. Our comrades from Jerusalem joined them from the beginning and contributed to their radicalizing. They sometimes join us in our Bil'in struggle. We often join them in other locations. This week end we marked the sixth year anniversary of the struggle in Bil'in, on the background of the uprising of the masses in the Arabic countries of the region. The rebellion of the poor has been spreading from town to town, from squatter camp to squatter camp, since 2004. Last week it arrived in Grahamstown. There is no third force, political party or communist academic behind our struggle. It is oppression at the hands of the African National Congress that has driven us into the rebellion of the poor. We are in rebellion because we are being forced to live without dignity, safety or hope. read full story / add a comment |
