The US special forces finally sent to Mount Sinjar in Northern Iraq to assess a mission to rescue the threatened Yezidis this morning [Thursday 14 August], reported that most of the displaced population had already been rescued in the previous days. What is not being widely reported is the identity of the Kurdish forces who secured the northern side of the mountain and opened a safe passage for the threatened Yezidi civilians, through the Syrian territory they control to Dohuk in the north of the Kurdish Autonomous region in Iraq. Embarrassingly for the US, arriving on its white charger to save the day, only to discover they are far too late, the saviours of the Yezidis are the Turkish Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and their Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) allies. The PKK are officially on the US and EU “terrorist” lists and the autonomous Syrian region defended by the YPG is subject to blockade by ISIS to the South and West, Turkey to the North and the corrupt Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) regime in Kurdish Northern Iraq to the East. read full story / add a comment

Israele aveva iniziato il suo attacco a Gaza per sabotare il compromesso tra Hamas e l'Autorità Palestinese e per restaurare un governo indipendente di un indebolito Hamas sulla Striscia di Gaza. Il compromesso di Hamas doveva essere una risposta al blocco egiziano finalizzato a smantellare Hamas stesso. Il fallito attacco israeliano porterà ad una significativa apertura del confine tra Israele e la Striscia di Gaza laddove prima dell'attacco passa lo stretto necessario in una situazione sull'orlo di una catastrofe umanitaria. Pese a que pide a gritos una interpretación contemporánea, las advertencias de Orwell sobre el futuro se presentaron como una obra perteneciente a un periodo remoto e inofensivo. Although crying out for a contemporary interpretation, Orwell's warning about the future was presented as a period piece: remote, unthreatening, almost reassuring. El día 13 de Agosto del 2003 ocurrió un hecho que marcó el movimiento ascendente de la protesta popular en Chile y, particularmente, al movimiento anarquista criollo. Esta protesta, a lo interior, fue uno más de los elementos que terminó por fortalecer la política de frentes y permitir así una maduración del movimiento. Se veía esta protesta como un ensayo para las luchas populares que venían –incluido el 30 aniversario del Golpe de Pinochet un mes más tarde- y en cierta medida lo fue. Existe a real possibilidade de reeleição da presidenta Dilma Rousseff (PT) e com isso seria concretizado um feito inédito de dupla reeleição. Dois debates entendem-se como necessários para traçar tanto uma análise do cenário eleitoral como de uma conseqüente crítica por esquerda. O primeiro aborda o cenário eleitoral e as candidaturas oficiais por direita, além do próprio risco de não conseguir emplacar um segundo mandato. In the apartment of a mutual friend I meet a young man from Aleppo I will call 'Ahmed' for his safety. His mood is lighthearted despite having part of a limb blown off by a grenade while fighting with the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo. We talk over tea and cigarettes while our friend Anarch translates. Ahmed takes a call from a friend in Syria with bad news: ISIS, the ruthless foe the FSA and other moderate brigades fought hard to kick out earlier this year, is back in Aleppo province. Israel started the attack on the Hamas to sabotage the Hamas compromise with the west bank authority, and restore a weakened Hamas independent rule in the Gaza strip. Hamas compromise was a response to Egyptian closer intended to dismantle the Hamas. The failed Israeli attack will force it to contribute its share to significantly open the closer of the border between Israel and the Gaza strip which was till the attack based on the bare minimal on the margin of humanitarian catastrophe. Whatever the details of the new cease fire and arrangements, the failure of Israel vicious assault to stop the Hamas from firing rockets on Israel is a significant "game changer". The failed attack on Gaza and the continuing popular struggle in the west bank are hastening the international pressures to end the occupation of the West bank and the closer of the Gaza strip. read full story / add a comment

La siguiente es una reflexión sobre los diez años del Congreso de Unificación Anarco-Comunista, organización fundada en Noviembre de 1999 que fue un importante hito en la articulación de un movimiento libertario inserto en las luchas sociales y parte integral de ellas en el Chile post-dictadura. Estas reflexiones fueron escritas hace más de cuatro años, para el número 25 de la publicación Hombre y Sociedad, la cual nunca vio la luz del día, junto a contribuciones hechas por toros compañeros. The uprising in Syria against the totalitarian dictatorship of Bashar al Assad is now in its fourth year. What began in March 2011 in the southern city of Daraa with schoolboys spraypainting the slogan from Egypt, “The People Demand the Fall of the Regime,” soon became mass protests of all sects that spread across the country as brutal repression met tenacious resolve. Soldiers who disobeyed orders to open fire on protesters mutinied and formed the Free Syrian Army (FSA) to protect protesters from repression. Regular mass protests and popular councils sustained a vibrant rebellion. But at the time of writing, ISIS and the Assad regime are winning a war that has cost over 160,000 lives and destroyed huge swathes of the country, displacing millions. After communicating for almost two years via skype and facebook I finally had a chance to meet Anarch, a comrade from Syria with whom I had been exchanging messages for so long. He is from the neighbourhood of Bustan al Basha in Aleppo. This is our interview. read full story / add a comment
