Many liberals and other Democrats see Trump as the main problem facing the U.S. Therefore their focus is on defeating him in the next election (or impeachment). They focus on the electoral system and hope for salvation through government action. I disagree. Trump is a major problem, but he is the culmination of years of political and economic development, and is related to similar politics in other countries. The fight against Trumpism requires a non-electoral and militant program. read full story / add a comment

Don't abandon the unions, or take sides in inter-union rivalries. Build a serious, organised, non-sectarian project of democratic reform and political discussion that spans the unions, including a rank-and-file movement that fosters debate, and opens the treasure-chest of union and left history and theory. Recover the politics of disconnecting from the state as raised by, for example, Occupy and the Rojava Revolution. Replace reliance on the state and parties with struggle, and destructive inter-union rivalry with a serious project of working class counter-power. read full story / add a comment

There has been an increase in anti-Jewish actions in the U.S. Why is this? Why have Jews been focused on by fascists and haters? There are traditional reasons for anti-semitism. The establishment of the state of Israel has created an interaction between anti-semitism and anti-Zionism. Where anti-semitism is irrational and reactionary, anti-Zionism is a just response to the oppression of Palestinian Arabs and Israel's alliance with U.S. imperialism. read full story / add a comment

In the 1980s I participated in a "dialogue" about anarchism and Marxism. Re-reading my writing now, when I am a revolutionary anarchist, I think that much of what I wrote then was wrong--with one exception. I went over certain key issues, such as the strengths and weaknesses of Marxism, the state, the revolutionary party, election participation, and national liberation--topics which are still important for anarchists and other radicals to consider and debate. read full story / add a comment

Lekhetho Mtetwa, a member of the Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Front (ZACF) discusses his role in the Landless People’s Movement (LPM), formed in South Africa in 2001. While the LPM was affiliated to Via Campesina, and linked to the Landless Workers Movement (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Terra: MST), its activities centred on urban squatter communities, rather than farm occupations or organising alternative agrarian systems. Then-living in a squatter camp in Protea South, Soweto, Mtetwa served as the local secretary; by 2013, this was the key LPM branch. Several attempts were made by political parties to capture Protea South LPM, using patronage and promises, leading to the eventual implosion of the branch. Mtetwa provides an essential analysis of the rise and fall of the LPM, and the role that anarchists can play in such social movements. read full story / add a comment

Ωστόσο, πρέπει να θυμόμαστε ανά πάσα στιγμή ότι ο ρατσισμός δεν μπορεί να καταπολεμηθεί μόνο από τον αντιρατσισμό. Η καταπολέμηση του καπιταλισμού και ο αγώνας κατά του ρατσισμού είναι δύο όψεις του ίδιου νομίσματος. Ούτε μπορεί να πετύχει χωρίς το άλλο. Η δεξιά είναι καλή στο να παρουσιάζει ένα όραμα μιας εναλλακτικής λύσης απέναντι στους δυσαρεστημένους. Πρέπει να κάνουμε το ίδιο και πρέπει να το κάνουμε καλύτερα, αφού το όραμά μας για ένα ολόπλευρο, ισότιμο μέλλον είναι πιο ικανοποιητικό. read full story / add a comment

For the past few years, most people would have come across news stories of how Kurdish fighters in Syria, especially women, have been crucial in battling the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Very few, however, would be aware that in the north and eastern parts of Syria these same Kurdish fighters are part of a revolution as progressive, profound and potentially as far-reaching as any in history.
In the north and eastern parts of Syria, an attempt to create an alternative system to hierarchical states, capitalism and patriarchy is underway and should it fully succeed it holds the potential to inspire the struggle for a better, more egalitarian Middle East, Africa, South Africa and indeed world. As in any revolution it has had its successes and shortcomings, but it is already an experiment worth reflecting on as it shows a far different world could be built to the extremely unequal and increasingly right-wing and authoritarian one that exists today. read full story / add a comment

Απορρίπτω την ηθικολογική μέθοδο που έχει ως αφετηρία μια δέσμη αξιών (πού μια καλή κοινωνία πρέπει να διαθέτει), ώστε να φτιάξει ένα σχέδιο του πώς θα είναι μια καλή κοινωνία. Αυτή ήταν η κλασική μέθοδος των «ουτοπιστών», όπως επίσης και των συγγραφέων της Parecon (participatory economics) στις μέρες μας. Απορρίπτω επίσης τη μηχανική σύλληψη ενός καπιταλισμού που αλέθει μια νέα κοινωνία, στην οποία δεν υπάρχει χώρος για οραματική συνείδηση. Αυτή η άποψη ήταν κυρίαρχη στον Μαρξισμό (και σε κάποιο βαθμό στη δουλειά του μεγάλου αναρχικού Κροπότκιν). Η απόκλιση ανάμεσα σ’ αυτές τις δύο απόψεις, βασίζεται σε μια θετικιστική απόκλιση ανάμεσα στις αξίες και τα γεγονότα. Δεν δέχομαι αυτή τη διχοτόμηση. The question of state government elections and running a Workers or Socialist political party continues to be raised in the working class movement and the Left globally. As we may know, there was excitement about the rise of Jeremy Corbyn in the Labour Party in Britain, left political parties in certain parts of Europe and Latin America and, more recently, certain shifts to more centrist positions in the United States amongst a section of the Democratic Party calling themselves “Democratic Socialists”. In South Africa, many workers and some activists seem cautiously optimistic by NUMSA’s formation of the Socialist Revolutionary Workers Party that will seek to participate in the 2019 general elections. read full story / add a comment
