You can always tell when a government is on its last legs: it starts going on about "traditional values." It makes sense though. A regime which has lost the respect of the people will complain that people no longer respect "traditional values" (i.e. authority). To suggest that there are uniform values for the 60 million inhabitants of a nation as diverse as Britain is as ridiculous as implying that these values set us apart from other people and nations read full story / add a comment

Capitalism has always relied on the state (to create it and to maintain it). Baker's book is a timely and well argued account of this truism using the home of neo-liberalism itself as its base. read full story / add a comment

Carlo Tresca was a newspaper editor (editing "Il Martello" --The Hammer-- for over 20 years), a passionate and powerful writer, an agitator as well as an organiser. He was happiest in the struggle, taking up any call for his help in encouraging Italian workers to strike and fight. His agitation was legendary, including the victorious strike in Lawrence (1912), the Little Falls, New York textile workers' strike (1912), the New York City hotel workers' strike (1913), the Paterson, New Jersey silk workers' strike (1913), and the Mesabi Range, Minnesota, miners' strike (1916). read full story / add a comment

Despite the hopes of the left for a revolt Labour MP's in Britain have voted for the introduction of ID cards. This does not mean the struggle against them is over, we can use direct action to them. But it would be a mistake to think that it is only the state which seeks to track our every movement. Capital does so too and in the free market, demand will be supplied read full story / add a comment

Standing before a gold and blue banner proclaiming "Plan For Victory", Bush spoke, as he usually does these days, before a military audience. It has been admitted that the USA has used chemical weapons in Iraq, namely incendiary weapons. This includes white phosphorous which was dropped in massive quantities during the assault on Fallujah. Phosphorus burns bodies, in fact it melts the flesh all the way down to the bone. So what of the moral case for war? Invasion, torture, collective punishment and the use of chemical weapons against civilians. How can Bush or Blair claim they are any different than Saddam? read full story / add a comment

While the USA economy is doing well, actual Americans are not. Worker's wages in real terms are falling behind due to rising inflation. Wages for the most recent quarter were 2.3 percent lower, after inflation, than workers received a year before. The average pay for an hour's work has less purchasing power than it had four years ago. read full story / add a comment

The defeat of Blair's draconian idea of allowing the police to lock up people without evidence for 90 days was a good sign. It showed some backbone and an awareness that the police can and will abuse its power. Sadly, though, our MPs were not against the principle of internment as such and voted to increase the detention period to 28 days. read full story / add a comment

A "preacher of hate" has struck again. His Medieval views on women are well known, stating that feminism "encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians." He hates gays. Now he has turned his venom to advocating assassination, urging the murder of Chavez, a head of state whose policies he disagrees. read full story / add a comment
