All of the Protea South Five, arrested after the electricity war in Protea South, Soweto, have been released on the grounds that 'there is no evidence against them'. In eTwatwa, Ekurhuleni, seven of the twelve people that were finally arrested have been released with all charges dropped. Jacob Zuma visited Balfour about two weeks ago, for the second time, where there were some of the most militant service delivery protest last year in July 2009 and even this year. The first time when he was in Balfour, he said he was there to investigate for himself what is happening. This time around, when he was there he said he is there also to investigate. So, for how long will Jacob Zuma be investigating rather than taking an action? It makes me wonder whether he was not trying to cool the people of Balfour and others that he visited so that service delivery protests don’t erupt. read full story / add a comment

People’s Movement (LPM). Three of
the people that they arrested are children of Maureen
Mnisi,

At 04:30 on Monday, 31 May 2010, in international waters, Israeli navy commandos invaded an international humanitarian aid boat, the Mavi Marmara, which was part of an aid flotilla travelling to the Gaza Strip. The troops fired on unarmed civilians, killing at least 19 aid workers and injuring dozens more. A range of South African civil society organizations have expressed outrage at this latest Israeli attack, which yet again reflects Israel’s arrogant and flagrant disregard for international law and human rights. We call on all South Africans to spare even a few moments to join the solidarity vigil outside the Department’s offices in Pretoria. read full story / add a comment

Last week Jacob Zuma visited the Sweetwaters shack settlement near Orange Farm in Johannesburg. He informed the nation that his shock at seeing human beings living like pigs had almost reduced him to tears. Protea du Sud est l'un de ces « quartiers informels » (bidonville) qui n'a pas encore bénéficié au cours des 16 dernières années de la démocratie. À l'heure actuelle, les gens de Protea-sud vivent toujours sans aucun service (eau, électricité et sanitaires). Hier, la communauté qui vit dans des maisons à loyer modéré a décidé de débrancher l'électricité que les gens des habitations informelles avaient connecté dans leurs baraques en tôle. Ils sont allés dans le quartier pour débrancher et battre les gens qui avaient connecté l'électricité dans leurs baraques. En conséquence, deux personnes ont reçu des coups de feu et une est décédée sur place tandis que l'autre a été transportée d’urgence à l'hôpital. read full story / add a comment

Protea South is one of the informal settlements that has not yet benefited in the last 16 years of democracy. As it stands, people in Protea South are still living without services (water, electricity and toilets). Yesterday the community that lives in the bond houses decided to disconnect the electricity that the people from the informal settlement connected into their tin shacks. They went around disconnecting and beating people who connected the electricity within their shacks. As a result, two people were shot and one died on the spot while the other one was rushed to hospital. read full story / add a comment

Afirmou-se aos oficiais da polícia e do estado, bem como aos repórteres, que as ONGs estrangeiras financiavam o movimento com o objetivo de deter o desenvolvimento para que, deste modo, os africanos continuassem pobres e mantivessem seu acesso ao financiamento. Sin embargo, en septiembre de 2009, algunos líderes fueron atacados en el asentamiento Kennedy Road por una turba armada que coreaba lemas étnicos. La policía se negó a ayudar al AbM y solo se hizo presente para desarmar la resistencia espontánea a la turba. Gente murió durante el intento de montar una defensa contra la muchedumbre, y las casas de más de treinta líderes del AbM fueron destruidas y saqueadas después de que los dirigentes locales del partido en el poder tomaran control del asentamiento. Los dirigentes partidistas, tanto en la ciudad como en la provincia, atacaron al movimiento en un lenguaje extremadamente fuerte en los días posteriores al ataque, condenándolo por haber exigido al gobierno que declarase la Ley de Asentamientos Precarios inconstitucional y acusando al movimiento de oponerse al desarrollo.
