2012 is the centenary of the African National Congress (ANC). The party that started out as a small coterie of black businessmen, lawyers and chiefs is today the dominant political formation in South Africa. It was founded by the black elite who were marginalised by the united South Africa formed in 1910, and who appeared at its Bloemfontein inauguration “formally dressed in suits, frock coats, top hats and carrying umbrellas”.[1] Today it is allied via the Tripartite Alliance to the SA Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).
Can the ANC be a vehicle for fundamental, progressive, social change in the interests of the black, Coloured and Indian working classes (proletariat), still mired in the legacy of apartheid and racial domination? This is what Cosatu (and the SACP) suggest. read full story / add a comment

El mensaje que grabaron los mineros decía “Fuerza al pueblo mapuche”, pero fue tachado por las autoridades ante el enojo de los familiares. El 16 de diciembre de 1991 fue realizada la masacre del Nilo contra el pueblo Nasa (paeces) del Norte del Departamento del Cauca. Masacre cometida con la complicidad de algunos políticos de la región, terratenientes, narcotraficantes y asesinos a sueldo y con la participación de la fuerza pública. Fueron asesinados 20 compañeras y compañeros entre jóvenes, niños y adultos. Todos indefensos. Masacrados por reclamar un espacio para poder sobrevivir. read full story / add a comment

On Wednesday, in an attack that would have made Robert Mugabe proud, Johannesburg Mayor, Amos Masondo launched an unprecedented and vicious attack on the recent High Court ruling that found pre-paid meters to be unconstitutional and ordered the City of Johannesburg’s to change its water service policies. The judgement was handed down by Judge M.P. Tsoka on 30th April. Masondo’s arrogant and completely misdirected utterances are unwarranted and dangerous and must be condemned with the contempt they deserve. read full story / add a comment

Judge M.P Tsoka on the 30th of April 2008 in the Johannesburg High Court declared prepaid water meters both illegal and unconstitutional. He further ordered Johannesburg Water and the City of Johannesburg to provide each person with 50 litres of free water per day.
Despite the seriousness of the court ruling and the nature of the case, JW continues to install prepaid water meters in Soweto. read full story / add a comment
