Washington, D.C.- Two years after Haiti’s devastating earthquake, the dire conditions in which a majority of Haitians live have failed to improve and in many cases have deteriorated, due to a consistent lack of progress in the relief and reconstruction efforts and the ongoing cholera epidemic, Center for Economic and Policy Research Co-Director Mark Weisbrot said today. Weisbrot noted that a general lack of accountability of international agencies and aid organizations has hindered efforts by Haitians to obtain justice and a better standard of living, particularly for those who lost their homes during the earthquake. read full story / add a comment

U.S. diplomatic cables now released from Wikileaks make it clearer than ever before that foreign troops occupying Haiti for more than seven years have no legitimate reason to be there; that this a U.S. occupation, as much as in Iraq or Afghanistan; that it is part of a decades-long U.S. strategy to deny Haitians the right to democracy and self-determination; and that the Latin American governments supplying troops – including Brazil – are getting tired of participating. read full story / add a comment

Haiti's first democratically elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, is scheduled to return to his homeland this week after seven years in exile in South Africa. He was overthrown – for the second time – in a 2004 coup organised by the United States and its allies. Washington has gone to great lengths to prevent his return over the last seven years, and this week the state department once again warned that Aristide should not return until "after the [20 March] electoral process is concluded." read full story / add a comment
