As the world watches events unfold in Egypt, the fates of other autocratic leaders in sub-Saharan Africa seem to have been relegated to fourth page news. However, it is worth considering the similarities and differences, particularly for Uganda where the incumbent President of 25 years will face re-election on Friday 18th February. read full story / add a comment

Just how bad is the state of Swaziland’s economy?
It’s a ‘catastrophe’ if you believe Roman Grynberg, senior research fellow at the non-governmental Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis, who said this week that changes made in the past to the way Southern Africa Customs Union (SACU) revenues were distributed, added to further changes being discussed for the future, would have ‘absolutely catastrophic’ consequences for countries such as Swaziland and would be ‘serious for political stability in the whole Southern African region’. read full story / add a comment

An Anti-homosexuality Bill has been tabled before the Parliament of Uganda. Many have risen to denounce and oppose it, both within the country and from across the globe. Many others have risen to support it. Some in the Church have argued in favor of the capital punishment in the Bill, others have argued for life imprisonment. The ones arguing for life imprisonment are actually considered to be in opposition to the Bill. After all, in Uganda “homosexuality is already an offence under the Penal Code of Uganda as is same-sex marriage, which is prohibited by the Constitution.” read full story / add a comment

Who imagined that in 2009, the world's governments would be declaring a new War on Pirates? As you read this, the British Royal Navy -- backed by the ships of more than two dozen nations, from the US to China -- is sailing into Somalian waters to take on men we still picture as parrot-on-the-shoulder pantomime villains. They will soon be fighting Somalian ships and even chasing the pirates onto land, into one of the most broken countries on earth. But behind the arrr-me-hearties oddness of this tale, there is an untold scandal. The people our governments are labeling as "one of the great menaces of our times" have an extraordinary story to tell -- and some justice on their side. read full story / add a comment

Back in September 2004, then Secretary of State Colin Powel declared that Sudan was involved in the ongoing genocide in Darfur. Move forward a few months, to the 14th of April this year when Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick was sent to Sudan. Zoellick greatly underestimated the number of dead in Darfur and actually refused to endorse Powell's description of genocide. read full story / add a comment

It is a grave error for anarchists to fall into the trap of attributing the chaos and instability of some modern African nations as being due to the weakness of the state. In fact I would tend to see the exact opposite as being more true, the imposition of artificial states which coresponded to no conceivable 'nation' and which were based on no strong local bourgeois and no large middle class (the layer of workers ideologically aligned with the bourgeois) meant that these states could never have been stable bourgeois democracies. read full story / add a comment |
