Clashes in Cairo

Last week, a salafist gang was allowed to burn and loot a church in Aswan province for five hours, together with the houses of some Christians. In response, Christians in Cairo, joined by many Muslims, came out to peacefully stage a vigil outside the State TV. The official response was brutal: armoured trucks ran over people wantonly while live ammunition was shot at protestors.

The army forcefully shut down TV25 and Al-Hurra for showing live footage of the Maspero street riots, which were moving towards Tahrir. The response of the people, Muslim or Christian, was strong and defiant: they bravely fought with stones and petrol bombs the fury of 1,000 soldiers armed to the teeth (plus their salafist thugs). Instead of falling into the trap of letting the conflict slip into sectarian war, they chanted "Muslims and Christians are one" and "Down with the Field Marshal", in a reference to Tantawi. The result of yesterday's (October 9th) fight was terrible: at least 25 human beings were massacred in cold blood by the SCAF, and over 270 were seriously wounded.

Gadaffi is leaving

The struggle of the Libyan people, as part of the wave of popular rebellions spreading like fire in all of the Arab world, is taking a really dramatic turn, with the people advancing their struggle against a regime bent on staying in power by whatever means necessary.

To understand better what is going on there, we held another dialogue on February 27th with our friend and comrade, the Syrian anarchist Mazen Kamalmaz, who works on the revolutionary blog http://www.ahewar.org/m.asp?i=1385

Protests in Libya

An anarchist call for solidarity

The news flooding from Libya is very shocking. Qaddafi's regime is perpetrating a horrible massacre against the masses in revolt, the mercenaries recruited by Qaddafi's regime, besides the regular army and security forces, are opening fire at unarmed Libyan people...

We anarchists and libertarians don't want to underestimate the possibility that some repressive power - Islamist or any other - could take over the revolution, but we don't prefer non-religious repressive powers over religious ones. We opt for the real freedom of the masses, for a free self-managed society organized freely and voluntarily from the bottom upwards. In the face of any such possibilities we see that the only proper response is popular direct action, conducted by free masses..

The Darfur War has been described as the worst conflict in the world today - and yet despite intensive media coverage, many aspects of the conflict are misunderstood because of the propaganda battle that runs in tandem with the war on the ground. The view from the ground offers different perspectives.

The USA alleges genocide against the Fur, Masaalit and Zaghawa tribes by Khartoum-backed Janjaweed militia – an interest spurred no doubt by Washington’s desire for access to Sudan’s oil reserves which are currently being exploited exclusively by China and to a lesser extent, Malaysia and India. On the other hand, Nafi Ali Nafi, deputy leader of the ruling National Congress Party admitted that Khartoum armed and trained a “popular defence force” from among civilians to be used to support the Sudanese Defence Force in its battle against rebels in Darfur, while denying any genocidal campaign.
Sudan remains, in World Bank terms, a highly indebted poor country. But oil is changing all that: by 2006, oil accounted for over 25% of Sudan’s GDP. However little of the wealth from that 120,000 barrels of crude a year finds its way into an economy propped up by Bangladeshi guest workers lured to Sudan on false promises, or into neglected extremities like Darfur...

An Egyptian sheads light on the present status of the Egyptian proletariat as an example of the Arab proletariat as a whole. The Arab countries do not allow independent social, political unions and organizations.
