At one point, the Israeli anti-authoritarian anti-capitalist organization Matspen called for an international boycott of products from the new settlments, but it took years - and the help of radical Zionists - before the call started to have any effect. After the project to boycott products of the settlers gained momentum, Europe (which granted tax benefits to Israel) responded to the call by disallowing tax deductions on the settlers' produce, as the settled areas were no longer regarded as part of Israel, a fact which forced some of them to relocate to the old Israeli areas... If the call to boycott Israel and to treat it like the Apartheid regime of South Africa succeeds in gathering support, it may contribute to finally ending the occupation of Palestinan land resulting from a war that took place all of 40 years ago this year.
In this article Israeli anarchist Ilan Shalif, a long-time member of Matzpen now working with the Anarchists Against the Wall initiative, examines the relevance of a recent article by Shulamit Aloni, "Yes, There is Apartheid in Israel", which itself is a response to Jimmy Carter's book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid". Yes, There is Apartheid in Israel, by Shulamit Aloni "Freedom Rides" Against Apartheid Travel Ban, call for action

So Saddam has been convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death. Few people will be shedding tears for the monster. The result was as unsurprising as the trial itself being hardly fair. Judges were replaced if they seemed like they were doing their job and being impartial. Lawyers and human rights organisations noted that it was prone to political interference and reduced to farce on occasion.

I’m an anarchist communist journalist and wrote this piece specifically for anarkismo.net. I entered Lebanon via Syria, from the north during the second half of the war, on the last access road not yet bombed by the Israelis (yet a plantation I travelled through was flattened an hour after I passed). I travelled mainly in Beirut and in its bombed southern suburbs, and in Sidon in the south as far south-east as the target of Ghazieh, leaving on the first military transport flight out after the ceasefire came into effect.
Photo: The stone arch of a monument under construction in Ghazieh frames a damaged Mercedes and the rubble of the home in which the 7-member Khalifeh and 14-member Badran families were killed and 28 others injured.

It was Israel's offensive on Gaza that sparked off the new war in Lebanon. Since it withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah has carefully avoided any clashes with the Israeli army on Israeli territory (limiting themselves to the area of Shaba in Lebanon, which continues to be occupied by the Jewish State). The moment chosen by the shia-ite fighters for their first attack, and the rhetoric that followed, indicates that their intention was to reduce pressure on the Palestinians by opening up a new front. Their action can therefore be seen as the first military act of solidarity with the Palestinians from the Arab world. Whatever one might think of what Hezbollah has done, it is important to understand the nature of Israel's war against the Palestinians in Gaza.

Ilan Shalif is already 70 but it does not prevent him arriving every Friday at the demonstration against the separation fence in Bil'in and confronting the soldiers of the Israeli IDF. Every Friday for the last year and a half, like a watch whose battery never runs out, he travels the road from Tel-Aviv to the Palestinian village of Bil'in. The demonstrations at Bil'in also see the participation of left-wing Israeli activists, many from the extreme left like the Anarchists Against The Wall, who arrive from the centre of Israel and demonstrate side by side with the Palestinians. There are also international activists from organisations like the ISM and the foreign media, whose photos from the place are often published all over the world.
