The giant supermarket corporation TESCO's recently fired two migrant Polish workers at its depot in Dublin, Ireland. They were demanding an end to the speed up in work rate, equal rates of pay for temp and permanent workers and for contracts for everyone who had worked at the depot three months or more.
It appears that TESCO may have cause to regret this action as far from lying down the workers concerned have organised with others to fight back. This started with a picket outside the depot which resulted in a two hour stoppage inside (under the cover of a union meeting - a common way of getting around anti-strike laws in Ireland). Now the sacked workers are at the centre of a campaign demanding a change in conditions at the plant that has seen solidarity actions take place in Poland - actions which are spreading to other parts of Europe including Britain

The statement from the IRA is formulated to clearly comply with the various demands made by the British and Irish governments over the last year and to so try and expose the Unionist political parties as the ones opposing progress. As such it not only prepares the ground for Sinn Fein to re-enter government in the north but also for it to go into coalition in the south.
The other side of the peace process has been the ditching of much of the radical left rhetoric of the republican movement of the 1980's. Pragmatism became the new watchword whether that meant meeting with George Bush at the height of the invasion of Iraq, imposing education and health cuts as part of the government of northern Ireland or voting for the bin taxes in Sligo in order to get power in the council. The IRA statement is the culmination of over 11 years of a public process and more years of secret negotiations with the British government. Irish anarchists have written in considerable depth about this process. We also reproduce here extracts from key moments.

Residents of the Eris peninsula in North Mayo have for five years being fighting against a proposed high-pressure gas pipeline line. The pipeline will pass over land, approaching farms and houses as close as 20 metres in some cases. A consortium comprising Shell, Marathon and Statoil is building the pipeline
For about a month now locals with some help from outside have been blockading the proposed refinery site, the Shell depot and the site where the pipeline is supposed to come ashore. This July five of them jailed for refusing to allow Shell from moving onto their own land which has sparked off an escalating round of nationwide protests including the blockading of Shell and Statoil filling stations and depots. Irish anarchists have been playing a role in these protests for some time including a few who have been working with the locals for months. A number of reports have already been carried on Anarkismo.net - here we bring these together with some more detailed explanations about what is going on.

We know war means death, destruction and oppression for the working class internationally. Yesterdays bombing of London is another example of this. We refuse the choice that is offered by both sides in this conflict - you are either for us or against us. We hope these articles will stimulate some discussion about the causes and real goal of this 'war on terror'. We include Anarchist reactions to the bombing and background articles. |
