The homes of PSOL and PSTU members, the Moinho Negro/Centro de Cultura Libertária da Azenha libertarian social centre, a dormitory of the MST (Landless Rural Workers' Movement), the premises of Via Campesina, an urban settlement of the Utopia e Luta autonomous movement and the public premises of the Federação Anarquista Gaúcha, the Ateneu Libertário Batalha de Várzea, were all raided by the police at the behest of the governor Genro (Workers' Party - PT) for the second time in less than four months. The Chinese curse "have interesting days" has materialized lately in our region. The surprising de-escalation of the Syrian chemical weapons and the Iranian atomic program has left Israel exposed to escalation pressures from Europe. In spite of the relative economic boom, the Israeli people and more so the downgraded "middle class", victims of the intensive application of neo-liberalism, are starting to express resentment. The media is vibrating with subjects related to the emigration of middle-class people whose nationalism is gradually being eroded by both neo-liberalism and the fear of the price of the continued occupation. This is not just a background to the joint struggle but also responsible for the burnout of activists. Though not at their peak, the weekly joint demonstrations and the involvement with Palestinian resistance to the crawling transfer continues. [Italiano] ... read full story / add a comment

The Workers' Party (PT - Partido dos Trabalhadores) government in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) is carrying out a witch hunt and raiding the homes and public premises of leftist organizations and social movements. On the afternoon of Tuesday 1 October 2013 the Ateneu Libertário A Batalha da Várzea, which is used for political and social purposes by the Federação Anarquista Gaúcha (FAG) was raided by the repressive forces of Tarso Genro's PT government for the second time. The door of the headquarters was broken down and the interior and equipment were overturned. On a table a note was left that read: "I came by and the door was open. I'd like to participate in the FAG". [Português] ... read full story / add a comment

The transfer of the Palestinians from the 1948 borders never completed. So, it continued on a milder crawling mode up to the present. One aspect was general oppression and harassment that resulted in the emigration of many of the Christian Palestinians of the north of the country. Another was the gradual transfer of the Bedouins of the south with joint struggle around the Arakib village and the Farber decree. Within the 1967 borders the transfer efforts are in the Jordan valley and the shepherd communities in the south with Susia as focus. More on the news were joint struggles along the separation fence - Bil'in, Ni'ilin, etc., and other places settler outposts and neighboring encroached on villages land like Beit Ommar, Nabi Saleh and Qaddum. Lately in the news: "In one tape, Mubarak is heard claiming that some six months before his ouster, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with him about a plan he was considering, to displace the Gaza Strip's population into the Sinai Peninsula." The Israeli State forces do not restrict their harassment to the suppression of direct actions, nor to harassment of the villages involved between the direct actions. They involve the military and civilian judicial system - harassment, extracting monetary fines, short- and long-term restriction orders, short jail sentences, and even longer sentences up to 18 months for Palestinian participants. Several dozen Palestinians have been murdered during the non-armed direct actions. Many Palestinians and about a dozen Israelis have been seriously injured. Hundreds of thousands of shekels in expenses for lawyers and fines have been paid and are still owed... In 2012 the attempt by the government to Quebec to introduce a 75% fee hike was defeated by the organisation of a mass student strike that lasted over 6 months. That fee increase was part of the global process of imposing the privatisation and commodification of education. Since the victory, organisers of the strike have been being doing speaking tours to aid the process whereby "youth and students everywhere are becoming increasingly conscious of the need to organize as a means to defend education as a social right". In September this tour reaches Ireland where we need to hear how a sustained and militant student movement that can win is built. ... read full story / add a comment

The transfer efforts continue in the Jordan valley, in 918 "fire zone", in locations less prominent on the news, and in the Bedouin region within 1948 borders. When the noise of the war drums is high, the increasing level of oppression in the 1967 occupation seems less prominent. Less and less people pay attention to or have hopes of the "peace talks" forced on Israel and the Palestinians by the imperial masters. The joint struggle continue in spite of the hot weather and the mounting Israeli terror. The picks of the joint struggle were in Bil'in where delegations from the other struggles converged to this week demo. The other pick was a big demo in Tel Aviv Saturday late evening where Bedouins from the south joined the more than 1000 participants from the main region of Israel. The turmoil in our region expresses the melting of world history as we knew it. It accelerates before it reaches its end as the axes of the old order cannot hold it any more. The Zionist settler colonialist bridgehead of the developed imperial countries in the cradle of human culture at the east of the Mediterranean Sea is being eroded by the resistance of the indigenous inhabitants who are recruiting supporters from all over the world. The cracks in neoliberal global capitalism, which seemed to have reached its ultimate victory just a few years ago when the end of history was declared, are pointing to the real end of the history of egoistic and alienated class society. In the day-to-day struggle here, it is still hard to discern the cracks in the structure of the system, but you can already smell it in the clouds of tear gas at the weekly demos and feel the ground tremor under your feet. The B.D.S. and involvement of Israeli and international Jewry neutralized the Israeli harping on antisemitism. The split within the Israeli elite when the scientific and advanced technology get the alarm of imminent punishment result in public cry. Till now, even the more realists of the Zionist left who are for the retreat to the 1967 borders (with some amendments) insisted that retreat will be conditioned on final peace agreement in which the Palestinians agree that no return of refugees will occur. To day, the ex-chief commander of army and previous head of a big party of the parliament suggested to agree to temporary peace giving back 60% of the 1967 occupation committed to give during the following 4 years the equivalent of the rest with final peace agreement. As Palestinians who are not in areas targeted for transfer efforts have much better life, the motivation for popular struggle do not expand and even shrink - and so is the Israeli side of the joint struggle - in spite of the fact we see already the light in the end of the tunnel (or because of it). The resistance of our comrades prevented the fascists to enter the place, but couldn’t avoid property damages: the destruction of all window panes and part of the metal blinds. Several people were slightly injured in this attack that lasted long minutes, mainly because of projectiles (stones, metallic tools, bottles) thrown by the fascists. When they arrived and when they left, the fascists chanted “on est chez nous”, “la France aux Français” (xenophobic slogans) and “death to the Jews”, as signs of rally and dispersion.
This heinous attack isn’t an isolated incident. It took place nearly 20 years after far-right activists set fire to the previous location of the “Plume Noire” in 1997, and it follows from the current rise of far-right and fascism, which results in a multiplication of attacks against minorities, trade unionists, and feminist, antiracist, LGBT and progressive activists. At the beginning, up to 450 Israelis of the radical left joined the hundreds of Palestinians of Bil'in and the region in the struggle against the robbery of the village land for the Modi'in Elit settlement and the separation fence used for that. It took more than 7 years till the state forces stopped to try to prevent activist from joining the Bil'iners in the Friday joint demonstrations. It took another 5 years till they stop to shoot on us tear gas and "non lethal" bullets. Two Bil'iners paid with their life, hundreds of Palestinians and Israelis were injured, detained and even arrested (Palestinians for long time up to a year and a half, Israelis no more than a day or two). Many thousands of international activists participated with us and contributed later for the international struggle against the occupation. The harassment of the village activists at nights mainly continue, but the struggle will not stop.

It has been a long and no doubt hard and bumpy road since 1956. We honour the many FAU militants who, like Alberto “Pocho” Mechoso, gave up their freedom and even their lives in the struggle for freedom and socialism. It is not because the Jews rule US... It is because Israel play an essential part in the Imperial struggle between US and Russia. Though the oil is less important to US economy it is still important to its partners. The western empire elite came to Peres ceremony because Israel helped to return Egypt to US sphere of influence. Protected Jordan from being taken by pro Russian Syria, Pushed Syria out of Lebanon for a while... and supply important services all over the world. Thus, the struggle against Israel apartheid is going to be much harder than the abolishing of it in Southern Africa. However, we have here the joint non armed struggle, the tens of thousands international activists who come here to participate and return home with the torch of struggle. The Israeli Jews who participate every week in the joint struggle refute the "anti-Semitism" false claims.

After so many years it is hard to get used to the replacement of tear gas and bullets with threat of arrests if we cross an imaginary line. For many years we worried about the day when the Israeli state decision makers will minimise or even stop the the harsh repression of the weekly joint demonstrations against the occupation, the settlers and the separation wall. On 27-5-16 was the first demo in Bil'in the state forces did not shoot us. It took a dozen such non shootings to realize it is a real strategic shift. The last Friday they even "invited" us to return the demo to the area near the new separation wall - forbidden for us for about a year. It seems the multi millions invested in the struggle against the B.D.S. recruited a more intelligent managers who was able to force the army to swallow their pride and stop harassing the Friday demos and the international activists participating in them.

imageTrump and the myth of the progressive but misled 'white working class' voters Dec 06 by andrew 0 comments

Once it became clear that Trump was going to become the president of the USA, my Facebook feed became cluttered with attempts to understand how that could possibly happen.  How could a white supremacist, misogynist and utterly transparent snake oil salesman accumulate so many votes?  Those on the left both inside and outside the borders of the USA struggled to understand what had happened. [Listen to the audio of this entire article] A common conclusion in too many of these pieces is that the left needs to reach out, and listen to the concerns of, those who voted for him as a priority.  In a similar fashion to how sections of the left evaluated Brexit, they see a working class anti-establishment rebellion in the Trump vote from what they term the ‘white working class’. They believe that component was won by Trump because it has been neglected by the left - often, they will assert, because the rest of the left was distracted by what they call identity politics. This is a simple explanatory story that is particularly attractive to those sections of the left that have a nostalgic yearning for an imagined past of pure class struggle, shorn of internal concerns around oppression.  But the concept of masses of otherwise progressive working class voters opting for Trump on economic grounds is a myth.  The attractiveness of that myth and its promotion has more to do with the hostility of that section of the left towards the influence of intersectional feminism than anything more substantive.  That hostility has caused them to seek out anecdotes and exceptional regions and present them as the typical story that defines the election just as liberal Hillary Clinton campaigners have focused in on Facebook false news stories as the cause of her defeat.

imageFidel Castro (1926-2016) Nov 30 by Samuel Farber 1 comments

After a long illness that forced him to withdraw from office in July 2006, Fidel Castro died on November 25. Castro had previously survived many U.S. efforts to overthrow his government and physically eliminate him including the sponsorship of invasions, numerous assassination attempts and terrorist attacks. He held supreme political power in Cuba for more than 47 years, and even after having left high office he continued to be politically engaged for several years meeting with numerous foreign personalities and writing his Reflexiones in the Cuban Communist Party press. In light of a likely future state capitalist transition and the role that foreign capital and political powers such as the United States, Brazil, Spain, Canada, Russia and China may play in it, the prospects for Cuban national sovereignty—perhaps the one unambiguously positive element of Fidel Castro’s legacy—are highly uncertain. Across the US, from cities to rural areas, it is imperative that anarchists and anti-authoritarians strive to build organizations to battle the emboldened far right, to advocate through militant action the needs of working-class communities, and to combat state repression.

What Needs to Be Done:
1. No to National “healing”, working with, or a grace period for the Trump Regime
2. Take to the streets – build a militant resistance
3. Build working-class defense organizations that resist racist attacks, sexual assault, immigration and homeland security raids and deportations, police brutality and state repression
4. Agitate and organize for workers actions – including a general strike against Trump
5. No to containment of the struggle back into the Democratic Party, electoralism and the Non-Profit Industrial Complex

What we call complete crisis of the system is the violent redeployment of power that targets to alter the terms of social and class antagonism for the worse for the exploited. The acute contradiction between real social needs and social and class relations that impose the amputation of these needs and make it hard for them to be met leads to the economic, political, ethical and environmental dimensions of the crisis.
